Did page 8 really say "half-sister"? I know the same word is used for stepsister and sister-in-law, and it depends on context for the correct meaning. Because that would mean the father was having an extramarital affair since at least just after Clarissa was born (since Chelsea is a year younger).

Not going to lie. Characters like this Flory guy I feel is kind of lazy, writing wise. There's been other stories like this where the Fiance is abusive/cruel. But generally because they believe in the so called rumors and lies people make of the MC due to their own stupidity. So at least this is somewhat different.

It's clearly shown how horrible the farther is, but I was at the very least hopeful that he wasn't the kind of person to have an entire second family on the wing. I suppose he just sees it entirely as a matter of course simply because of his title...

and the irony for this is he did it to protect her from her father and later he plan to save her from him and later apologies and maybe cut anything relationship with them doing so curtail the fathers ambition to used his Noble peerage of Duke. and now she's engage with the crown prince making the fathers influence more powerful. so yeah the winner here is the bastard father of hers..

Feel like the problem is this chapter needed more angst and romantic rivals.

Like it feels weird because him treating her like shit is presented as a plan that he calmly came up with and enacted.

Personally I'd replace page 7-10 where he tells us that MC's family wants to switch the engagement, comes up with a plan to tell her her eyes are ugly, and calmly does so at a tea party with something like:

Scene: Some random social gathering, MC and he are both there

1. He overhears some people talking about how MC's family wants to switch the engagement AND speculating on who might engaged to MC instead
2. He goes to find MC and sees one of the dudes the gossipers mentioned. Maybe just on the way, maybe looking at her from a distance, maybe even currently talking to MC.
3. Regardless MC looks super pretty when he finds her.
3. He pulls MC aside and tells her to hide her eyes because they're ugly.

And then the rest of the chapter is scenes of him being increasingly mean to MC because he's jealous and controlling plus clearly unreliable narration where he tries to retroactively frame that as him protecting MC.
