Inro pretty much carried anything. They were the answer to pockets, which traditional kimono lacked. They were kept at the waist via cords passed under the obi sash, and a carved toggle of wood, ivory or bone called netsuke prevented the inro from dropping. A lot of inro were for keeping tinder and striking kits, tabacco and writing materials.
