I dont think it was "axed", this run for 5 volumes and the story run its course, there wasnt much to add unless you like la telenovela mexicana since outside it, there was nothing but padding ...

Stories have a ending and most authors are content with finishing a story, the "Comics" model of a neverending story is very much limited to comics, there are authors that do milk the story for all its worth and more but at one point the reader gets fatigue and turn off.

Well this was a waste of time, every editor should tell an author if they simply want to end any given romance with "timeskip-->they randomly find each other--> implied spending more time together handholding", then they simply shouldn't bother, is so overplayed.
You might say "but she is too young and he is too old for them to do anything", then pick another plot, the author is god, any contrivance is a consequence of his or her choices. 4 years.
