I was thinking the same thing at first, but once they know where the exit is they either keep trying to leave or they die. The gods are probably killing them out of spite rather than letting them leave if they're not going to be part of the war either way.

bruh, it is CANON that if somone is killed over-and-over again they lose their memories. the valkeries could just repeatedly rip people to shreds until they no longer know shit about the tree and there would be no reductions in the armies strength buuuut nooooo manga needs to increase the stakes high enough that MC will ditch his friends so they decided to bullshit a reason into existence and call it a day.
