Moe is more caricature than character in this chapter. Hebikawa speaking to her other friend about switching table tennis for volleyball and then Moe comes butting in like a rabid chipmunk spouting off like its her business. I'm not really even sure of the purpose. It's not a good look for her. If anything, it further reinforces the fact that Hebikawa is the only girl with a multi-dimensional personality, especially with Kusunoki's Mary Sue 150% pure type reactions. It looks like Kusunoki may get fleshed out a bit more now with her back-story.

Also, I hope when they do start playing volleyball it is not in sweaters and long pants! Where is the fan service?!? 😛

The reason why moe interfered was because hebi was blatantly trying to strongarm her friend into doing something she was visibly uncomfortable with and said she didn't want to do. Sure you could argue that it was none of her business, but what she said was objectively true and the friend would have corrected her if it wasn't.

like some months ago (Valentine's event), I remember a lot of comments were about author finally remembered who is the actual heroine. I mean I kind of appreciate that now she acts more like a character even if she keeps her "mary sue" traits, but a bummer that we're 4-5 years after the series started and the main heroine is starting to get deep.

As many mentioned it's sad that Moe is there to just be a tool to move the characters now, pretty much from the start some of us joked with her having the chance to be like Botan (ookami shounen wa kyou mo uso o kasaneru), but at least her going at snek is pretty much in character with her even when she was making fun of her at her lack of volleyball skills, as she's a tomboy and has always disliked snek.

Right - but the point is that Hebikawa's beliefs are important to the plot of this manga. "What if" hypotheticals are fine, but looking at the story the author is actually writing, Moe is merely a tool for Kusunoki's & Hebikawa's character arcs.

She needed to fall for Keisuke, because if she didn't, Hebikawa wouldn't see Moe and Kusunoki remain friends despite liking the same person. She needs to be forward and blunt, because she has to challenge Keisuke and Hebikawa and push their boundaries. She needs to be dedicated to Kusunoki, because Kusunoki is too passive at the start of the series to do much on her own in being more outgoing within class.
She's set up to fail from the start, and she'll even have to be okay with her best friend getting her crush, because she has to, in order to prove Hebikawa wrong.

Her personality and her actions are for the direct benefit of others, rather than simply facets of her person that exist for herself.
Granted, we haven't gotten the dedicated screen time with her that we have with the others--which is something else that reinforces that she's not a "full character" of the series.

And all of them have things that feel like qualities specifically implemented to counter facets of the others, but none to the extent of Moe. She's almost a Secondary Character, despite being firmly linked to the other Primary three.

also besides those points you make (which are true), she's also there for Kusunoki's "mistakes from the past to not be repeated", when she lost her friend because the boy was into her, which is part of why she turned so shy growing up.

I don't think the way Moe is acting here is anything new, she's always been headstrong, her calling Hebikawa out doesn't make her a bitch.

Also Moe acting like that is direct consequence of Hebikawa acting like a smug bitch to her, so Moe not only sees snake as a someone manipulative and bitchy, leading her to see Hebikawa's attempt at switching in a worst way (though she was right about it being nasty manipulation, as we can see by Konoe's sweating) , but also feels like she lost to snek and that she has a score to settle, and we even get the characterization of Moe as someone disliking losing.

Perfectly natural for her to get into fight with Hebikawa at first excuse and try to tease her about sports when she feels snake's weakness in that area, just like Hebikawa teased her about love.

Though it's funny that Moe still uses Kusunoki as backup when arguing.

Give it another 50 chapters or so and I think Hebikawa is going to have a lot to feel guilty over, this is of course, all assuming that after that length of chapters Hebi is still on course to wanting to "expose" Kusunoki's dark side, in the event that she does and then it blows up in her face she's going to have contend with.

• Finding out that Kusunoki's mom is dead
• Finding out that Kusunoki doesn't have a dark side (She's just anxious about repeating past mistakes)
• Blundering any potential romance with Keisuke (I don't think Keisuke will ever gain romantic feelings for her but he certainly won't have any in the situation where he finds out what Hebi was trying to hurt Kusunoki)
• Blundering her friendship with Kusunoki
• Being forced to face the reality that her view on the world really was wrong and stubbornly trying to prove otherwise has only cost herself

Of course, that's assuming that Hebikawa will still be full steam ahead with trying to expose Kusunoki after 50 chapters or however long it takes, it's also possible that something happens that causes her to give up on the whole thing like maybe somehow her mom's ex boyfriend comes after her again and Kusunoki gets hurt protecting her or something or somehow Hebikawa ends up visiting Kusunoki's house and discovers her mom is dead or as other posters are starting to mention maybe Hebi's mom and Kusunoki's dad end up dating and moving in together (I think this outcome is unlikely but it's funny to consider)

Though if Hebikawa does give up on hurting Kusunoki without doing anything major then I'm not sure what else could happen, with Hebikawa atleast, maybe she tries to pursue Keisuke honestly but concedes when she sees that Keisuke is committed to Kusunoki?

Having Hebikawa's whole worldview blow up in her face will probably sting for a bit but considering the type of people Keisuke and Kusunoki are they'll probably forgive her.

I'm absolutely on the side of this direction. She NEEDS more depth. But the turn around was jarring to say the least and without any foreshadowing / build up. Hence my comment.

That's exactly what is happening. Hebikawa being bad at volleyball (a team sport) is meant to mirror her ineptitude at developing genuine friendship with other girls. Whether she likes it or not, she's being taught how to play ball.

I think reading this whole chapter with "friendship = team sport" in mind makes a lot of sense. For example, how being able to form a genuine friendship is something you aren't inherently capable or incapable of, but rather something you can learn as long as you face the challenge head-on. (Like Moe just forced Hebikawa to do.) And that holds true even if you're particularly introverted and have gone through times of loneliness, so long as your heart is in the right place. (Kusunoki, who learned how to pass a volleyball from reading volleyball manga and practicing by herself.)

There's also a lovely bit of dramatic irony in Hebikawa thinking she's still on the outside looking in when it comes to Moe and Kusunoki, completely unaware she's already been assimilated. Kusunoki is completely unafraid and showers her with kindness, and Moe is sports-brained enough that she'll be friends with anyone who is a) on her team and b) shows effort in practice.
