She was comforted by thinking that an ideal didn't exist, because she didn't think it was actually possible. She totally should've tried, but she didn't (seemingly). Now that she's looking at one of her ideals, she can't believe it and wants to see the flaws Kusunoki has.

Hebikawa kinda reminds me of Accelerator from To Aru.

Hebikawa admired kindness and beautiful souls, but when confronted with the dark reality surrounding her she immediately crumbled and became the unkind and ugly person she is now.
Accelerator wanted to live his life like a normal kid and make friends, but when confronted with the dark reality of the Academy City and all the attention his powers drew to himself, he immediately crumbled and became the unhinged murdered they labeled him as.

Despite that, both Hebikawa and Accelerator have this admiration for the people they want to hurt. Hebikawa wants to expose Kusunoki's dark side because she reminds her of her former figure of admiration; meanwhile Accelerator kept calling Touma "hero" during their fight, and even after that never called him by name and kept projecting this ideal of a hero onto him.

Now, Accelerator went so far into the deep end that he even chastised Touma for not having saved someone Accelerator held dear, even though Touma could never have done so in the first place. It took Touma giving him a reality check and telling Accelerator to become the hero his friend needs for him to understand that Touma is just a normal guy that didn't crumble in the face of adversity like he did, and now decides to try being a good person once again.

Will Hebikawa follow that trend set by Accelerator or will she go further down the dark path and actually become a villain?

From what I could understand a lot of people were expecting the flashback to put her in a more sympathetic light. When said flashback does the opposite it's no wonder people hate her more. If the purpose was to give reason why she is the way she is that's great. Didn't need context on her actions when her current self speaks loud enough and it doesn't change the fact she's a cunt and people will hate her for that.

I think the flame war in the comments is an indicator that Hebikawa is serving her purpose as a character lol. She has people getting into heated arguments over the story. Personally, I'd like a to see a redemption arc where Hebikawa realizes people aren't all manipulative cunts and she doesn't need to resort to that to have a good life. However, I don't want a perfect, fluffy ending where everyone becomes friends. I don't think that's realistic, especially considering the trauma Shizuki experienced, but I would like to see less manipulative cunts in the world.

no one's called her Hitler, people have are just saying that she's an asshole and is manipulative, always has been. Then people like you are misconstruing what people are saying and overexaggerating for some reason. No one who is calling her manipulative has criticized people calling her an interesting character, like literally give me one example of this

You're like really rewriting what people have actually been discussing in previous chapters. most of the people criticizing her say "she's manipulative/she uses people to her advantage". which the story has shown. most of the people in her defense are saying "we all did this before, right guys?"/"it was a practical joke!" or "her behaviour is very normal" or "she's just ambitious". that's not "shes an interesting character" dialogue lol. and somehow youre saying the average intelligence of the readers are low
