I mean granted the guy that wanted to meet her seems like a superficial pervert only into her due to her looks and probably has ulterior motives that goes beyond being friends, but I'm gonna assume that she doesn't know that, which makes her turning him down so fast kinda suspicious. That said the MC almost definitely should have started with helping her make friends with other girls (but then we run into the problem of him being uncomfortable around girls and not wanting female relations to begin with).

Actually now that I think about it they're kinda trash partners for the goal of helping the FL make friends...

I'm kinda curious where the concept of these popularity rankings in Japanese schools comes from. Like you said, I've never experienced any K through 12 education where everyone talks about the prettiest or second prettiest or third prettiest girl in school. Much less one where everyone openly talks about it and glares at you when you talk to them like a normal person and not some weird groupie.

It's especially strange when you consider that middle and highschool students in Japan are generally more pre-occupied with studying for entrance exams than popularity contests. I do know Japanese society and early education are incredibly problematic and kinda cutthroat with public rankings and mass conformity, but I still can't imagine where cuteness rankings appear in this, though I also haven't gone through middle and high school in Japan, so who knows?

I almost want to say it's just a trope from visual novels but that still doesn't feel right. Logistically it does serve to raise stakes and introduce artificial drama using a basic social hierarchy so even if it makes so sense I can see why it's done, but I'm really curious where it comes from.

do you know how traumas work? also they are teenagers donkey. you should think out of the box how others perspective work. its his first time a girl doesnt provoke his trauma and his socially inept and no confidence, thats how his body mechanism works. give him time to develop like a normal person instead of downplaying a literal kid growing up. or maybe you should grow up instead 😕

And she was the only pretty girl that he really talked to in middle school...so by immature logic he kinda threw every pretty girl into the category of untrustworthy backstabbers.

if I remembered correctly with this then its kinda understandable but wrong to be so untrusting of pretty girls as to the Mc its a stereotype, the only way to fix this is to simply meet and get to know other pretty girls which IS happening in the story.

i can understand what you mean and i get that he was traumatized by that girl who was fake with him, but even then having been through that he seems socially adept enough with his friends that he should be able to distinguish how hes blowing her is in a real insensitve way. At least thats my take from it from seeing how hes able to comunicate well with them. seems just strange how he cant notice how is actions towards her are rude even if he is a teenager.

yeah i understand how trauma works, having experienced it socially myself with girls. Im just saying just from seeing how he socializes he seems knowledgable enough to know that how hes acting is wrong. i just find it weird how hes. I think it’s along that line of thought, teenagers and kids especially enjoy creating patterns and boxing things/people in them, that why even elementary school kids are fascinated by rankings/tier lists and quantifying completely arbitrary things.

All of this is to say that, since teens are already likely to do this, it’s not that much of a stretch to imagine that japanese school life mixes that with their infamous and highly competitive education system. Where students are all forced to compare each other.

That being said, @malfoym the whole thing of “whispers around the characters” has always been an extremely stupid trope for me too because — not only is it a very transparent and forced way for the author to insert their narrative without any effort but it basically never makes logical sense, either in the narrative or in real life. Things like that should mostly be kept to through bubbles of individual characters.
