Damn short chapter. Also who knew the cat loves the taste&feel of mighty massive bull frogs. To admit such a thing even if it was just her inner thought oh my how lewd. I wonder what happens if a cat&frog mates, sounds like an abomination against god if it was born.

A splendid frog... We all know what this means here.
His look though at the start of the chapter. Seems he really wants to be truthful about this here, to not have her pretend and keep their relationship as it is.

Since she seemed to be the one to plant the idea of looking for more arrows, I assume that means some of the last chapter (or one before) actual took place after the start of this chapter.

In my humble opinion, Maomao x Jinshi "romance" is the worst part of the manga. Not that it is not well-written on inconsistent - it is completely in-line with what can be expected of romance in this universe. It's just that Maomao is explicitly not attracted to Jinshi and wants nothing to do with him, meanwhile Jinshi leverages his position to force himself upon her, and so there's nothing for me to root for

...please don't use the word "frog" and the phrase "matter at hand" together ever again :notlikethis:

Maomao's "suspicion" of Jinshi is still the weakest part of this story since she should have been able to figure it out a long time ago. Yes, she mentioned last chapter she didn't want to know, but that's still miles away from "oh, I would figure the whole thing out but I'm choosing not to" which is more of her usual MO.

I'm hoping the next chapter has a little bit more on the conspiracy, since the denouement here is...faster than a forbidden frog fabulously... uh, some other f-word that is far longer than four letters :pepela:

Maomao has commented several times how he is handsome that its regrettable he is an eunuch. Its not that she is not attracted to him or his looks but considering her experience and environment she would be fine with avoiding any and all physical relationships for the rest of her life.
Jinshi hasn't forced her into anything that doesn't involve her work as a poison tester or cunning into finding clues. He has been far more patient for someone his position and this is just his move made in frustration to make her acknowledge his intention although a wrong approach on someone like Maomao. A move that would make a lot of girls happy but not her.

This was an awkward first step onto someone who has a lot of build up trauma over the opposite sex. Where did you get this history of him forcing himself with his position.

Tbf, their relationship is already made analogous by the story to that of cat and owner, which IMO quite accurate. We’re here to see how the owner reacts to the cat and vice versa.
Perhaps if you approach it that way too, it’ll be more enjoyable?

And.. a pistol. A flintlock pistol, known for their godawful accuracy and noise, among other things; used in an assassination in a country which have few, if any, firearms. Genius.

Sadly, the man having even fewer qualms about forcing himself to a servant was the norm in Imperial China...

That's because what you said is exactly what's happening. She could easily figure things out and she knows it, but she also knows that knowing or even suspecting it would put her really high on the shit list of many powerful people who will have her killed (or so she thinks, but the truth is not far), so she doesn't even wants to consider it or think about it.

Thinking that someone is attractive and being attracted to someone are two different matters. Maomao knows Jinshi is objectively attractive, yet at the same time, she's not attracted to him.

Multiple times throughought the manga he has made it so that she either has to work for him or otherwise be around him. Sure, that's stretching the definition of "forcing", more of a "worming himself into her life", still quite a shitty way of acting around her. The "forcing" part is quite more literal in the last two chapters however, and I don't see him acting upon his frustrations as a good excuse.
