As our forefathers have always told us:
Be confident and carry a big frog,
but still be wary,
of the frogblocking falling dog.

Maomao's "suspicion" of Jinshi is still the weakest part of this story since she should have been able to figure it out a long time ago. Yes, she mentioned last chapter she didn't want to know, but that's still miles away from "oh, I would figure the whole thing out but I'm choosing not to" which is more of her usual MO.
But that's precisely why she played dumb about the entire thing.

I swear there's so many smooth brains who read this manga

Thinking that someone is attractive and being attracted to someone are two different matters. Maomao knows Jinshi is objectively attractive, yet at the same time, she's not attracted to him.

Multiple times throughought the manga he has made it so that she either has to work for him or otherwise be around him. Sure, that's stretching the definition of "forcing", more of a "worming himself into her life", still quite a shitty way of acting around her. The "forcing" part is quite more literal in the last two chapters however, and I don't see him acting upon his frustrations as a good excuse.
The only things Maomao is attracted to are medicines and poisons. She can't have a romance with those. This is still a work of entertainment industry and must work with the laws involved in that business, in order to avoid the axe. I'd say the story has gone to a remarkable extent to avoid having Maomao being forced into any romantic developments. In fact this time as well she was spared from it. Perhaps the author really doesn't want to take the story one millimeter closer to it than this, but must occasionally throw in some morsels to keep the readers coming back.

Also, don't underestimate Maomao. She basically has the personality of a 50 years old madam who has seen it all. She can take care of herself better than 99% of the characters we have seen so far. I can barely imagine what she would need to see to get shaken, let alone traumatised. After this incident, I bet Jinshi is the one suffering emotionally, not Maomao. Just look at how she was immediately back on her feet to solve the case, while Jinshi could do nothing but sit still and think of his own cover.

I understand your point... but he really doesn't, because I am not talking about standard concepts... I am talking about empathy.
I lumped that into "morally".

I'd also add that she hasn't been vocal about most of the things she wants or doesn't want. As for what she has said, she's been granted quite a bit. Certainly more than anyone could reasonably expect.

by doing that he is putting her life in danger in a way that could go way past any help he could give.
Not really. The list of people who outrank him isn't exactly long, and that would only be an issue at all if either of them told anyone else who shouldn't know she knows.

I won't hold it against him for long, Shinji still is a very good person, but what he did here is wrong.
She was wrong as well.

moooom, people are bringing up their modern western sensibilities in the ancient china manga again
And cherry picking where to apply it.

Then please, oh great wrinkle-master, describe to me the scenes prior to this arc where she explicitly made that assertion. I do not recall (and I may be wrong about this, as I haven't re-read from the beginning in a while) any thoughts from Maomao where she described anything beyond a vague inkling that Jinshi wasn't a eunuch and deliberately chose to end her inquiry there. Since the story is written from her POV, it would be an unfair characterization to perceive thoughts implicitly when her musings are always explicit.

I'll wait. Proper references take time to find after all.

Very Easy; past chapter.

She felt that thing, she chose to ignore the hints he's not an Eunuch (from her thoughts) aka someone who should not be there and yet he is, she knew anymore involvement = mother of all shitstorm.

is a little confused by the definition of "prior to this arc" including the last chapter and so will continue waiting for a responsive explanation by someone who is clearly better than me at reading and paying attention to the minutiae

continue picking the cherries, they are delicious :glee:

I didn't say anything about "prior to this arc"

If you want to move the goalpost, that clearly tells me you aren't looking for any answer from me.

I suggest you look for some means to expand your head, considering yours are only better than the palace quack (from the very first chapter, if you don't "remember")

...but I did ask for it? My request was very specific for scenes prior to this arc, since the point of my complaint about the characterization is that Maomao should have seen the discrepancy in her understanding of who Jinshi was versus who he actually is far earlier than 60+ chapters in.

It is perfectly acceptable to admit a mistake in understanding my original question. I am a forgiving debater and will continue my wait for a responsive answer.

Edit: ooh, I'm collecting strikes now! Exciting! Imaginary internet-points for the win! :win:

You really need to reread the whole manga. You either have a very bad memory or have terrible reading comprehension.

Mao got a hunch that Jinshi is way more important than just an eunuch very early on (that time she pushed him out of danger and hurt her leg) but she decided to ignore it to avoid trouble. This wasn’t implied but showed clearly. Later on she deduced the relationship between Jinshi and consort Adou. But again, she just shook it off and avoid pursuing it. That’s the two I can remember but I’m sure there are more. Whenever it comes to Jinshi’s background, Mao actively avoids getting deeper because she knows it’s too dangerous. The fact that she discovered that he’s not an eunuch at all and again avoid accepting it is entirely consistent with her behaviour right from the beginning. She didn’t just figure it out 60 chapters in. She figured it out bits by bits throughout the manga from the beginning until now.

You just managed to miss out all the Everest-sized breadcrumps.
