That said, the term used in the raws is 給食, which can be used, if i understand correctly, for provision of lunch in general, and not just at educational facilities, but also at other places, like hospitals, workplaces, prisons, etc.
So, its possible (yet) that he is a legal adult, though, i would say it's safe to assume that MC is less than 20 years old, else Nee-san would have asked him to buy alcohol on his own.

Honestly my original point was just we don't know what the gap is to not like "this gap". Personally I'm assuming high school, so 16-18 range, but it could be anything.
