Usually the excuse for a couple in romcom manga to not actually start dating is something really dumb like "I'm not worthy of her till I win this dumb race" or whatever but I kinda like that Kaede's excuse is just "we clearly like each other but I want to enjoy the situation of childhood friends that like each other and will obviously date soon". It fits her personality and isn't as annoying

I'm with @PseudoAngel in this. I think there's no ambiguity. I said something similar in the comments of chapter 160. They are just adjusting to their new situation. "Childhood friends" is just a way for them to refer to themselves that makes them feel comfortable as they adapt to the changes that the not-too-distant future will bring.
