if a series gets pulled or will no longer get updates because of an official license, a little icon or something next to its status would be great.

@ShardTooth Licensing doesn't guarantee that people will stop scanlating it. Can name at least a dozen licensed series with ongoing scanlation. We don't have any rules against it either

@Plykiya : this is a little offtopic, but since you brought it up...

let us suppose that a group is indeed scanlating a series that is found on mangaplus. and let us then say that this group decides to upload to MangaDex their release.

according to what you said above, MD may host both the scanlation release as well as show a link to mangaplus. so, in effect, mangaplus is treated like any other "group" (except it just gets external links), and users can choose to read/ignore whichever version they want. MD won't disallow one version over the other, basically.

Correct, naturally. Like rule 2.2 says: "The existence of an official translation has no relevance to the rules for uploading scanlated releases." This applies to the M+ chapters just as well. They simply have absolutely nothing to do with what scanlations people want to and are allowed to post here.

Code:
not to mention licensing is a local thing. one series may be licensed in the usa, but not in parts of europe, russia, or south america, for example. as well as, the opposite can also be true. and some countries just never license manga.

@eksynn not to mention that countries like indonesia prolly has never seen any of the official english pages EVER unless they were sold digitally. english mangas are generally 10-20 times more expensive than the official indonesian prints (which were print on newspaper with really cheap ink that easily smudges and sold for the low low price of one USD. seriously, even the toilet paper here is of better quality.) so good scanlations are always appreciated by me since that means i don't have to literally look for them in singapore.

Nevertheless, it's a good idea to have the icon so you know it's licensed. It won't stop people from uploading scanlations, but if people want to buy the series then they have the right to know so they can support the artist.

It's a moral plus for the staff and admin since this move can be seen as supporting the artist and industry.

Agree, it's not like there's any downside to it. More awareness is good.

At the very least a proper multi language implementation has to be completed for the title page before we can even consider this. And even then, licensing is not done by language, it's done by region...

@Holo With globalization it's not much of a region issue as it is an availability issue. A manga may not be available in the native language of many countries and because it likely never will be, the second best choice is usually English. So instead of listing licenses by region it's better to list by language.

Made a quick mockup here:

Hopefully this can be considered after you guys finish multilang support.

PS. Since some people seem opposed to this idea, an on/off toggle like for hentai may be worth considering to be added to user settings.

Fundamentally I don't think there's any reason to not add it, given we link to the official stuff.

But yeah, thanks for the advice!

Also if you don't have a reason not to implement it then maybe change the rejected tag to planned lol

But there are licensed mangas that cannot be scanlated because of licensure, so I guess puting some "Licensed manga" is a good thing

Just commenting manga can be licensed by different companies in different regions even in the same language, or even in the same region. Any eventual rework of the official links and indicators should take this into account.

Just for clarification, licensing doesn't stop you from scanlation. You might do it if the official releases are months/years behind or if they're really bad.

The only time when you should stop is if they fast and decent, like the MangaPlus offerings.
