Environmental kills are a staple of under-leveled grinding. Games can be quite generous when they program in enemies taking fall damage or the like.

I didn't get the skill ball section at all. It's rare that it is not a skill ball? and he is so mad that skill balls give haphazard skill sets and his did not, that he threw his free sugar into lava?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the not is an error.

And he panicked, not wanting to get the haphazard skill set, he threw the candy to avoid receiving the skill. But based on the conversation, he received the skill immediately after tasting the candy and is about to check his skills to find out what he got. It seems like it is not usually obvious when you receive a skill in this world, so he will need to check it to see he got something.

But even if it is a haphazard skill set you get, it is not as if it is ever bad to get them. Not like there is a max-limit in skills, or actively detrimental passives, so always better to have, than to havenot.

That would be my thinking personally, more skills means more options even if the skill is considered a "miss."

That being said, not knowing the range of skills in this world, it is hard to say that there isn't detrimental passive skills. Another manga I quite enjoy, D-Genesis, had
an unused skill orb pop up called immortality. But when it was analyzed it said it would turn the user into a living skeleton, if I remember correctly. A few other passive skills that were obviously bad by their name appeared in that world.

I looked at the raw words used about the the skill ball and haphazard skill and wanted to give my two cents.

On the raw about is/not skill ball:
スキル玉じゃない
The "じゃない" here is more like "Isn't that a skill ball?" in the rhetorical manner, not the literal "That's not a skill ball". I typically see it used when a character wants to point something out. So she means to say it is a skill ball.

On the raw about haphazard skill set:
ハズレスキル
"ハズレ" is a miss/failure/consolation prize (in a lottery context), so it might be more understandable why he threw it away if it was labelled as "a trash skill", or "a miss".
I wouldn't call it "haphazard", because it's not that the effect it would give lacks cohesion, it's that it usually(outside of specialized builds) is worse when compared to other skills with similar function (cost opportunity/min-maxing), has no competitive practicality (e.g. cosmetics/aesthetics), is actually detrimental to have (e.g. "take increased damage"), or is too impractical/conditional to ever make use of (e.g. "deal more damage with your pinky").
"Hazardous" is probably better than "haphazard", but the skill doesn't need to be harmful/detrimental to be considered useless/unwanted. (...But, well, Japanese gamers might consider in different aspects of a skill to be a miss than I do.)

Anyways, I hope that tiny hat gives no stats and that she's only wearing it for the fabulous fashion. The true body is actually the hat, hehe.
