The age gap isn't the issue. The issue is that he knew her when she was in elementary school. There's a difference in meeting someone in their twenties and you being in your thirties than knowing them when they weren't even a teen and you were an adult. There's no way I could do that. That's definitely off-putting.

If there is genuine attaction, trust, and room for each to grow and find common ground with one another without necessarily being locked into the box of what you were (or the quite immature expectations of what a person thinks you should be), I think you'd be a bit dumb to spurn this.
More likely: A situation like this would be ripe for some overly possessive nutjob retaining a quite idealized image of you on a pedestal, getting involved with them is probably a very bad idea.

Sorry there's no way I can be into someone who was an elementary schooler that I knew personally while they were growing up. That is very creepy and as the adult I would have put a stopped to that right away. You wouldn't be dumb for getting ick vibes from that.

I think the other translation has her telling him to marry her not to be her wife. Unless it is clear and non-ambiguous in the raws (and there's a lot ambiguous in Japanese) then I would consider it a translation error. I refuse to have a Twitter/X account so I can't look up the Japanese used to see for myself (which would be doing searches and Google Translate because I don't know Japanese).

would have to read the raws to know better, but other than just her type of character, one thing that came to mind is that as far as I know, 'yome' (嫁) as the word for 'wife' is also used as a "gender neutral" slang term for both 'waifu' and 'husbando' in one

EDIT: of course, there are also many clichés with some form of "becoming the bride" -phrase (with that same 'wife' word used I think), and thus you sometimes see male characters saying stuff like "I can't become a bride anymore" too. It's... complicated
