Dear god I hope the MC gets some character development soon cause right now he's just absolutely pathetic. If the manga just becomes the MC running around like a headless chicken and crying the whole way through then I'm probably gonna dip out sooner than later.

Yea, this isn't really making sense. Why would you only get one chance to get on the boat? How is any of this supposed to "purify" their souls? I assume the girl who went into the water is permanently damned to be stuck there forever now.
Losing interested really fast after a moderately interesting chapter 1.

The boats could be a fake option because the souls that end up in this situation would never take it. Giving them the fake option would increase their suffering because now they think that they missed their chance at a peaceful afterlife.
