But what's with the attempt at building up the plot to save the village only for them to do it in less than the page it took to build it up.

Because the battle was not the point, quite the opposite: by not being worthy of even a single panel, it hammers down the derelict state of the dark army (if we can even still call it an army, and not just a bunch of bands) under the new management.
The other two point are how the queen handles the kingdom (decisions, delegations and how she trusts her delegates) and the fact that Mactaulo is a loyal and competent commander, despite not agreeing with all the queen's choices and (the shock! The horror!) not liking MC.
