Not sure the knowledge of process of pulling oil from the ground and refining it into it's constituent fuels and byproducts is all that important the person designing and building an ICE. At most they choose an available fuel/energy source and start developing their engine from there.

Thats not to say there isn't some other person researching new and better refining methods to process crude oil, only that most engineers designing engines wouldn't need even surface knowledge of the oil refining process to preform their job.

All true, but as they are respectively a former demon lord, though utterly incompetent, and a crooked hero who has evaded capture for the majority of the story, I would expect a minimum level of animal cunning with which to avoid fatal errors.

I would consider checking the hole which exposes their escape route open a bare minimum task towards keeping them selves safe.

Which obviously means they lack the intelligence to check the newly made human sized hole they just noticed in their escape tunnel. Right before talking about topics that would expose their origins... right out in the open.

The enhanced level of forced idiocy and incompetence is getting stale. Sure it's a clichéd staple of manga, but doesn't necessarily mean I have to like or agree with it.
