Basically, they come across ice cream sticks that seem to reveal the fates of those who entered before them - people who were there for things like a "drive" or "wild plant foraging" implying what the victims were doing before they disappeared or met their doom. When they heard the voice say "Test of courage?" - it’s then they realize the forest entity knows why they’ve come and that they’re next. The entity might be currently writing that in the next stick, marking them as the next victims.
