I like how Minami is significantly less dense than most protagonists in that she can at least comprehend the idea of being asked out by Karin. I don't think she really views it as a possibility though, given I don't think Minami has actually realized that girls can like girls.

That said, ooph. I forgot just how strong of gender dysphoria Minami has and represses. She's literally at an amusement park with her best friend, and her first thought was "If I was a girl right now we'd both be happy." The ONLY panels of Minami smiling was her thinking of doing something nice for, and directly caring for Karin. For all that we make fun of Minami for being a somewhat narcissistic trans idiot, she does genuinely care about Karin.

RE the ending note, you are absolutely right, but Japanese is further deliberately rigged against you delivering a confession (even back in the 1100s they must have known this would be vital to the manga industry).
  1. As you said, Japanese is very low on pronouns, so it's very easy to mistake what the subject (or object) of the sentence is.
  2. 'suki' is deliberately vague, it just means 'like'. Then you're supposed to figure out that means love in this specific instance. But as I'm sure you've seen in other manga, people can just say 'sure, I like you! And I like him and her too, you're all very likeable.'
  3. As famously documented (sometimes maybe apocryphally), Japanese men can be so vague (because otherwise they'd have to commit) that 'I love you' can be basically sidling up and making c'mon c'mon motions with your eyes. 'The moon is beautiful tonight' or 'I want to eat your miso soup every day' are famous lines for 'hey baby, marry me'.

So literally all Karin said was 'suki' 'desu', literally 'like', 'it is'. The 'I', 'you', 'churros', 'love' is all implied and subject to misinterpretation (though in this case 'I' is very strongly implied). 'I like churros' was a perfectly valid interpretation of this since dumbass MC has just mentioned churros.

And Japan's manga industry loves it that way.

everyone here lamenting Karin here...
she truly has a tragic love. she likes boy Minami, and Minami clearly has no interest in being boy Minami

and as Lyricanna said, it's so evident by their facial expressions. Karin is having the time of her life, so much so that she's missing out on Minami kinda just cruising through it
