I personally thought this was handled pretty well, all things considered.
Phliea gave him a run for his money, but also didn't really get brutalized so much as "just" injured and exhausted. Since this is a tournament, there were only so many ways for this to go. Either Philea won and lost to the absurd Yuri in the finals, which we already kinda saw in their training, or she lost and Yuri gets to "avenge" her.
The second development is cliche, but has more interesting options than the first one. And even though it's cliche, the story more or less references it and turns it into a sweet moment for the two.
