I understand their love for Chise, but to go after one of her few friends is horrible less this spell needs someone who is close and of the same species. There are plenty of kids they coulda got...

I wouldn't be surprised if it does require someone close to her. This kind of magic usually has a pretty sick sense of humor weaved into it in stories. Either the people who would be willing to do it can't because they don't actually care enough about someone for them to be applicable in the spell, or it acts as a deterrent to people like Chise who might need the spell but would hate to actually pay the price. That leaves it pretty much in the hands of people like Ellias, someone who cares about the person the spell will be used to save more than anyone it might sacrifice, even if that means earning the hatred of the one the want to save by sacrificing someone they care about.

On the surface at least, that is some dark shit.
BUT, whether Elias knows it or not, that girl has the touch of Joseph on her, and it just so happens that Joseph is probably the solution to the dragon curse (much as he was the original cause). So all of this is probably going to come full circle without the girl dying.

If you have a child, you might genuinely consider doing the same if absolutely no other options were available.

Not act on that thought most likely, but undoubtedly you would seriously consider it.

The love for those you consider your own family should never be underestimated. Many would, and have, killed for the sake of their family. And many will do so in the future.

Does it make them cold hearted? Yes and no. It is complicated. Is it wrong? Undoubtedly, but I would not say it is cold hearted, if anything it is born from too much passion.

I think he might do have noticed his presence behind Stella and thus figured out he knows about Chise's condition.
