I absolutely despise the trope that an MMC can't pursue a romantic relationship with an fmc because they are "unworthy" or because "x person would fit them better". At least in America, this thinking is just not a thing at all, and even in Japan, where there is a high level of social hierarchy and conformity, I could NEVER see someone just shutting down all of their feelings because "this guy is more popular".
I'm not going to say that it doesn't happen or that it's the worst trope I've seen, but it is horrible. Why are 95% of all mcs just total pussies. The running gag for a long time is that mcs are dense but, honestly, they are just babies most of the time.

Honestly idk about america or japan but in my country its so common that people have low self esteems and confidence thats why this happens. Realisticly speaking its not a bad troupe if its not overused, like u may think this in the start but she is with you all days all the time so you gotta stop. Bc at some point it turns into something like denial plus potential cuckery. He behaves realistic until now but he gotta stop thinking about these depressing nonsenses to make the story develop nicely. Otherwise it ll turn into something like, they r having married life but he still rejects the option of dating her completely until the end and at the end it finishes with a friendship with the line "we will figure out more of each other later". I know this shit wont happen bc of how long light novel is but still.
