Aoyagi must've been quite the respectable dude in junior high, if he's as off-putting as he is now, and those who knew him from before still want to try and help him.

Feels like the way he conducts himself at present, he could have cured cancer before and he'd still be pariah'd for forever, if he didn't have the Protagonist Plot Armor feature.

I guess that's why the Main Heroine is a foreign exchange student, so that she has zero relationship and perspective on Aoyagi's past and can meet him completely at face value. I don't think the story makes any sense or has any chance of "redeeming" Aoyagi if the FL had to be someone from anywhere near his old or new prefecture.

Anyway, thanks for the TL work.

I wonder if it's all just teenage hyperboles or if something actually horrific happened. Maybe Aoyagi cooked up a daring scheme, but it backfired with irreparable consequences. Why all the talk about football otherwise?

Place your bets on the big event from MC past.
I will put 10 nyancoin on car accident that swept his parents and Imouto as is tradition in these rom-com.
I saw a spoiler for the "tragic backstory" and it isn't nearly that bad. I've come to the conclusion that his messiah complex is just self satisfaction and he's simply running away from his problems, thinking making himself hated is a form of "atonement". Dude is just a coward who can't accept that that past incident wasn't his fault. Just a stupid kid who thinks he's better or more important than everyone else. I'd honestly give him a good slapping to knock some sense into that thick skull of his if I could.

Does this still apply when the person who experienced it was somewhere between 13 and 14 years old?

The scope of experience and perspective for the average adolescent makes a lot of stuff very outsized, at those ages, that would seem "manageable" to adults.
