Where they bait you in with a cute fluffy story, and then slap you in the face with some uber dark shit?

I don't remember what the supposed dark twist was but I am sure it was somewhere in spoilers in the previous chaps.

I absolutely despise the trope that an MMC can't pursue a romantic relationship with an fmc because they are "unworthy" or because "x person would fit them better". At least in America, this thinking is just not a thing at all, and even in Japan, where there is a high level of social hierarchy and conformity, I could NEVER see someone just shutting down all of their feelings because "this guy is more popular".
I'm not going to say that it doesn't happen or that it's the worst trope I've seen, but it is horrible. Why are 95% of all mcs just total pussies. The running gag for a long time is that mcs are dense but, honestly, they are just babies most of the time.

Remember that this guy's whole thing is acting in a manner that would benefit the group, often including self sacrifice.

You'd probably be surprised by how common this trope his in real life in Japan.
It's a mixture of many things, but just keep in mind it's par for the course to end up with such a mindset in the environment they grow up. You're saying all that from the POV of an outsider, but it's not so easy for someone who doesn't know any better to break out of the "system".

I could certainly see it happening in a situation where they are all just classmates, not knowing each other pretty much at all. But as it is, Aoyagi and Charlotte meet each other almost daily in the privacy of their own homes, they talk a lot about all kinds of stuff, and Aoyagi is already pretty much a big brother for Emma. It makes thus little sense Aoyagi would think Charlotte should get together with some random dude who has never even had a conversation with her. Maybe Aoyagi has his own circumstances and doesn't believe he's a good match for Charlotte (despite her going as far as sitting in his lap), but why think she should start going out with someone she has zero connection with? That bears the unfortunate connotation of Charlotte not having in say in the matter, despite it being about her dating someone. Such an attitude wouldn't even fit Aoyagi's character because he shows nothing but respect toward Charlotte and even a little kid like Emma.

This was my problem with the chapter. Clearly Aoyagi has a troublesome history and isn't chuuni just because he wants to be one. So, he doesn't consider himself worthy of a happy relationship due to whatever happened to him in the past. Okay, fine. But don't start making decisions for Charlotte and pairing her with someone else she has shown no interest in.

Huh you're right. I skimmed all the chapters and it wasn't mentioned. The closest to it would've been chapter 1 but it wasn't mentioned either. I think this might've been touched on more in the LN

They took a creative liberty with this. They don't get into his backstory till like V2-V3ish and they get heavy into it during V4-V5.

Actually Charlotte has a bit of a tragic backstory technically, but it's really just a plot device to bring them closer together. Remember, this is still a romamce story through and through, so don't pay too much attention to the drama. Just let the story pan out.
