I assume that's the point, err the joke. It's a pretty globally common trope because it's something we do a lot in real life (going to more effort trying to find a work around than just doing the work). Though I think the idea of them asking for help is a solid one. They originally intended to do their homework just with help from a friend. The only problem is that their friends have all been preoccupied (this is why you phone ahead) 😅.

He's smart, but somehow didn't figure out the mom not-so-secretly nudged her own daughter to him lmao. Still, it was Frances' own decision to fall in love with him so... Allocer def got the rizz.

Yeah it's a good payoff. I love this series, absolutely no waste with whatever they include in the story. Chekhov would proud, or maybe Oda/Toriyama too since they're the experts of making stuff up on the go (especially Toriyama).
