I think it was that orias was always self conscious, that all he has got is luck and without it he is a nobody, when he lost that chess match it was like confirming his worries, later when he sees how the trio still working to keep the place in a good shape for him to return to and how much they admire him he understands even if luck is all he have as long as these kids keep looking up to him he will continue or so I thought

Given he ricocheted them off various objects including the walls, a gun, fencing and a model sign perfectly to do a star, so yeah, it's pretty lucky

It's not clear in English, but in that one big panel of him with the gun to his head, the huge SFX says "CLICK." He didn't just suddenly regain confidence, he shoots himself with the one blank first, realizes he still has his amazing luck, then goes into performance mode and ricochets the remaining 5 bullets into the ceiling.

can't wait to buy a copy once this chapter/volume gets it's official English~ I really do love and appreciate this arc, 'luck' motifs and themes have always been fascinating to me, but moreso than that, how Orias pulled through to catch the momentum others have set up for him

Things line this remind me of the long combat tourney in the second Alita series. There was a guy that had a trick he performed, where he dodged bullets on stage. His son was egged on by other kids to see his father dodge when not performing. The kid shot his father.

So, the father didn't want to disappoint his son, he left the house and did training to be able to dodge any bullet. He went insane in the process, and joined the combat tourney to show his son that bullets will not hit him anymore.
