I think the reason they can do that is because the original has taken the time to develop the characters' personalities so well in the first place, so the AU can "skip to the good stuff".

I agree with this to an extent. but I do wonder...

if we just look at the "latest 50 chapters" of the main manga in the vacuum, isn't it still... a lot more slower in its pacing?
that's the impression I get, anyway.

still, I appreciate all the work that goes there, with focusing heavily on certain characters and smaller moving pieces, but I think that's partially why it feels slow sometimes. like so far in this spinoff EVERYTHING is centered more and more on Iruma. Sure, sometimes we get deep peeks into Asmodeus, Clara, or Ameri, but the scope of focus seem to be in much managable, smaller chunks and repeating across fewer characters.

Like we haven't randomly gotten another Kalego chapter again here, or something like that.
I think the main manga would do something like that, for better or worse. It's ambitious, to say the least.

I find myself enjoying this AU more and more than the original, and I feel like it mostly comes down to the mangaka being bolder and more aggressive with the cast, pushing certain character traits to the front and making the cast shine more.

It does make way less sense without the original.

There are moments and lines that are total randomness without being references to the original.

I think it's normal if some people enjoy this one more vs original canon, different tastes and all.

But is this manga objectively better? I wouldn't agree so easily because as one commenter said, I think most of our enjoyment is because we have the original to compare to. I'm not sure if I'd react the same if this came out first— if:au fits more of early 2010's male mc dark shoujo titles which unfortunately imo, hasn't been as popular as it was...

Like A lot of the set-up for this AU was built heavily on the foundation of the original. I don't think many going into it blind would really be able to get fully immersed with the first couple of chapters. It takes its time to settle in.

I find that I like this spinoff a lot because I have the main manga to compare it to, so there's the excitement of "how will Hiroja spin [canon thing] into the Mafia AU?" than I have the excitement of what new thing comes up next.

So my hot take is that this spinoff isn't any better than the main manga, it's only as good as it is, because it's building off what the main manga establishes, like the personalities of the characters, or the factions and such.

I love the main series so so so much and I love every character we met there and watched grow so in the AU I CAN SEE HOW THEY END UP HOW THEIR PATHS INTERACT AND HOW IT'S DIFFERENT FROM THE MAIN YET STILL NODDING TO IT that's the fun of it. It's not comparing whsoe better whose not it's the fun of seeing the main manga given a new spin. The spin off had the build ups all ready we got excited for Alice BECAUSE we knew our Alice from the main show. We all got excited to see how Ameri ties in BECAUSE we know the canon Ameri.
