hang on

batoto had donations AND adverts AND chinese sponsored series and they never posted how much they made per month either. I guess this is a case of your shit don't stink lol

batoto dying and mangadex replacing it was the best thing that happened for readers, such a better site with better features and actually getting more features all the time... batoto's only new feature in ages was blocking users from reading stuff if they didn't have accounts due to their piss poor rinky-dink infrastructure getting bot raped lol

probably time you cleaned those rose-tinted glasses off and wake the fuck up

mangadex ftw!

Aren't Alexa rankings based on search results? Batoto was always pushed down in results, to the point where even if you googled "series name batoto" it wasn't guaranteed that the first result would actually be batoto. Alexa rankings are a terrible way to rank website traffic as a whole, but a great way to rank SEO.

DDoSes are performed by, you guessed it, bots. And it's not so much a DDoS vulnerability as it is that your search is just poorly programmed from a performance standpoint. There's no way anybody that isn't a billionaire could keep up a DDoS for 3+ months, your users were just accidentally destroying your site performance through search.

How interesting that you supposedly have 7.6million unregistered users, but barely anybody said anything when you locked search down to registered users only. Sure, there are alternative ways to search (google, for example), but just the sheer lack of user response on even places where they don't have to register shocks me. I'm not saying that image is false, I'm just saying it's very interesting.

Lastly, you have to upgrade a personal account to a business account to accept donations. It's still his personal account. You still won't answer any questions about how much money you make or where that money goes, since it doesn't all go to servers. And shall I post the screenshot of you very publicly in the Discord saying that you don't want to tell people how much money you make because then they'd stop giving you guys more money?

Grumpy never pretended to be open about that information, but I have a good chunk of the numbers. Server costs were over $1600/month, and Grumpy only made about $200/month from donations. The site was just too old and entrenched for users to care that much about donating. Batoto also never got paid for the sponsored stories from the app company, he just did it to be nice.

Batoto's server performance was perfectly fine with bot scraping. Grumpy moved to reduce bot scraping as a way to reduce server costs, since he was paying a large chunk of it out of his own pocket. Most ad companies had blacklisted the site so he was forced to use very low CPM ad companies. And as I mentioned... not a lot of users donated.

Last but not least, maybe it's not that I have "rose tinted glasses". Think about all the scanlators like Meraki who fully supported Batoto and Grumpy's work, but are pulling their shit from MangaDex because of it's policies. Then get back to me.

can you also post the screenshots of grumpy saying which account all 3 sources of his money went into, how much it was, where it went and how he spent the money he got from the site sale, cos he sure as shit didn't refund the donations with it lol

I'm really happy and proud to be a registered user of Mangadex ever since it was launched. Being able to read my favorite manga without being plagued by ads is so great and I also appreciate very much that the scanlators' wishes are respected. I hope you'll keep growing even more!

mangadex post their costs on the site for all to see, how much they get doesn't matter to me cos i can't afford to donate either way, but i sure am grateful to the people that do :)

gonna need screenshots of your figures proof too... we can all pull random ass figures out of our assess to support our statements when we need lol

yeah, i for example, fully support Friends Reunited as a website over Facebook. it is easy to support something that is not relevant, died years ago, and was inferior in every way and used by less people heh

batoto dying and mangadex replacing it was the best thing that happened for readers, such a better site with better features and actually getting more features all the time...

MangaDex pros:
✓ Mobile-friendly.

MangaDex cons:
✗ Ugly user interface.
✗ Poorly coded and unoptimised.
✗ The reader is also atrocious, unintuitive, slow, and doesn't even work with JS disabled.
✗ Claims to support scanlators, but has shown multiple times in the past (see: FA, Meraki) that they don't give a shit about them.
✗ And more...

batoto's only new feature in ages was blocking users from reading stuff if they didn't have accounts due to their piss poor rinky-dink infrastructure getting bot raped lol

Batoto actually had proper infrastructure. MangaDex on the other hand has such cheap servers and defective queries that they had to disable search claiming it was due to a DDoS when really, it was due to their incompetence.

It's quite amusing to see the hate squad arriving.

Everyone else though, thanks for your support as usual!

You guys at Mangadex have worked SO hard to get it to this position, and as a solid consumer of works published here I give you all a standing ovation. Well done all of you, we absolutely love what you've done.

Batoto never really actively tried to attract or retain users, mind. Grumpy had very explicitly an attitude along the lines of "if we start worrying about user growth we will lose sight of what's important" or something to that effect.

Also, I'm old—I had no idea that kissmanga was considered the behemoth these days. In my day it was mangafox and before that onemanga...? XD When batoto came out I stopped paying attention. I know where some of the Noez sites are still (i.e. mangafox, mangahere) whenever I do need a shitty aggregator site that's scraped everything since time immemorial.

Sorry, I know it's not amazing but I do want to make it better! That includes writing a new separate, more basic version that mimics Legacy but works better and hopefully also without js.
