Methodical and serious adventurers take the time to research their next victims (and any other potential hazards of the environment they're going to).
The problem is, methodical and serious people rarely become adventurers. The profession is full of muscleheads, intuition-based types, and wide-eyed idealists.
Real roles in an adventuring party should be not "fighter, cleric, thief and mage", and not "Tank, damage-dealer and healer", but "Learned, prepared and observant". But that isn't going to happen.
