@Kayriel What on Earth are you talking about? They weren't killing the kid. They would, at the very least, be paying fines big enough to make them cry tears of blood if they murdered someone in the middle of the street, if not have a meeting with the headsman. It's one thing to protect yourself from an assailant and another to outright murder someone. They were going to teach the kid a lesson so that he wouldn't hopefully steal again. It's not like they were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, of course, they were doing it for revenge and to satisfy their anger, but it would be pointless if they killed the kid and got into much bigger trouble themselves.

The actual point here is that if you "save" the kid, you are then responsible for the kid. The easiest way to take that responsibility would be to hand the kid over to the guards. In the past he might even be hanged for being a homeless thief (if he is homeless). Or he might be sold to slavery or sent to the mines. If he had money, he could pay the fines, but why would he be stealing anything if he had got money? This is the actual point of why you shouldn't interfere easily. He could have chased those merchants away easily, but what happens next?

The three new people were no heroes, they were criminals themselves, and apparently their major trick is to scream at people about superficial, seemingly just stuff to confuse them, so that they can afterwards walk away free.

@Kaarme

You're trying to tell me that three large, fairly decently-developed men stomping and kicking on a small child indiscriminately does not lead to the small child's death? Especially when, as I stated before, the child is kicked damn near twenty feet halfway through a stall, and was almost impaled by god knows how many tools? I'm surprised he survived THAT, and nothing has been introduced in this series yet that allows me to believe such a thing is considered normal for normal people. Does everyone have some sort of extreme damage barrier from birth? Can you not die unless HP is depleted and someone's been hiding the fantasy-game-mechanics-screen from me? ... Actually, I'm reading so many isekai right now that the latter is an absolute possibility, that I've forgotten that this is a game-mechanics world. Is it?

@Kayriel The kid said he's okay, quite energetically in fact. You could see from those panels the kid was more worried about getting their attention than any injuries, most likely fearing he will be brought to the guards. If he was seriously injured, that wouldn't happen, in most cases. Nothing changes the truth in what I said: It would be pointless for those merchants to punish the kid to a degree where they themselves would end up suffering more severe consequences. They were kicking the kid, yes, but not with all of their strength, most likely, and they know how sturdy people in that fantasy universe are.

Wow. Who needs enemies with friends like them? First they stop him, by forcing their own morals on him (Don't get involved.) and in this way they get him accused (for being an arsehole) for not WANTING to help. Then they step in in his defense, but instead of telling them, it was their own fault, because they held him back, they start to argue that they haven't done anything wrong, even though they obviously did, with really weak arguments.

So, they are actual criminals. They hold up merchant carts and this dipshit thinks he is robin hood. You cannot force your morals on others and you can't use force to push your ideals either. What the men did was wrong and they should have turned him over to the guards. Minato or elk should have called the guards.

This reminded me of KotOR II. There was an incident on one planet where no matter what you did, your mentor would question your reasoning for it and you'd watch the consequences of your actions, whether helpful or not, spread some misery.

If the kid didn't want to get hurt, he shouldn't steal. By stealing, he took the risk of getting hit when he gets caught. Actions and consequences, as my dad used to say.

Those justice loving motherfuckers should just die. Their beliefs are way too radical to be allowed to exist

Of course the annoying mage girl in the annoying guy's party is hotter than any of the girls in the MCs harem... How disappointing.
