you're probably the closest to the correct quess. The noble doesn't really understand how powerfull Nell is. He thinks the stories that are know about here are exaggerated. So he's hoping on a lot of collateral damage in lives and property, so he can discredit Nell. I won't spoil the rest 😁

2. If rival fails, it's his fault.

With regards to how stupid these nobles are? It's a combination of "Not enough intel" and "Not trusting your sources".

With the former, they have no idea that she's married to the Demon Lord now. In fact, you can count on one hand (even one missing a finger or two) how many people outside of Yuki's domain know about this. And this is only because they never made a big deal out of it. Hell, I don't think there was even a ceremony - just Lefi going, "Oh? You want in on this? Alright, it's fine just as long as you acknowledge that I'm in charge."

For the latter... Yeah, that's just plain stupidity on their part. It's at the same level of stupid as "shooting the messenger". You don't like what you're hearing, so you either disregard it entirely or throw a hissy fit that someone would dare to bring such news to you. Besides, even if it was all an exaggeration, there would have been no harm in hedging their bets. And there is no kill quite like overkill.

Too bad for them that the "overkill" is gonna be on the part of Yuki and Nell.
