I didn't say they have no writing system, it's you who somehow interpret it that way.

I think at this point we just have to accept there's some fantasy reason they can't speak the same language. Perhaps the Queen's language is, I dunno, imbued with magic or something and does that cool thing where it's overlaid upon itself to create a whispy reverb. Or they're each performing vocalisations that the other can't work out how to emulate (nasal, glottal, etc). Or or or.... For all we know, the inhabitants are screeching modem tones at one another and try learning to speak THAT!
You can see they've had enough problems getting common ground on two syllables for names.

Also I'm coming up with valid things he could try to do, you're just saying 'she could misunderstand, why even try' over and over in different ways
If you could come up with one valid reason why MC from his point of view should be putting 0 effort into trying to communicate that he wants to learn her language, I'm all ears

Not 'could', 'would', although I was also thinking of spoken language specifically.
Golem was silent and thus couldn't speak anyway, but if he asked it to show him the alphabets it probably can.
As for Mary, if she care enough about him being able to speak, she would've done something about it (the same way she had his 'favorite meal', 'favorite clothing' etc prepared)
She didn't care enough to pursue the matter, and eventually neither did he.

So it's not that he 'doesn't want to learn', he 'doesn't care to learn (anymore)'

@WhimsiCat even if he is a lazy ass and makes no attempt to study the language, being submerssed in it and hearing nothing but it and having nothing but it spoken to you. Then you eventually come to understand words, combinations of words and more. It takes longer to do the older you get, but still he should know a bit of the language like common words like yes, no, hello and goodbye. Heck, there are probably some common phrases used by people. The only thing is that most of his time initially was spent with mary and her bear servants don't talk. i do hope that as the story progresses the odd work or even sentence not made by ren he is able to understand. Heterogeneous linguistics (i think thats the title) does that as the mmc learns more about the monsters and their languages. The author did a chapter about a kind of universal way those who can't communicate by words or their normal methods to others would play games to understand one another

Re-reading this (again), I'd like to point back to ch 1, where Mary started talking to him as if it's a normal thing until realizing her words aren't getting through.
If I have to guess the magic she used to summon him also was supposed to give him the ability to understand the language, but she screwed up somehow.

So, I'd also like to give examples of some alternative cases (I put them in spoilers because spoiler)

Makoto from Moonlit Journey. Without the blessing he literally can't speak the 'hyuman language/common language'

Though he can hear them just fine and learn to communicate through writings, so he's a bit of both cases.
(and later down the line he get said blessing so hyumans can understand what he say)

In Release That Witch, the MC later (subconsciously) created a world where any and everything in that world can communicate with each other regardless of spoken language.
There was a moment where he called a Demon into that world to have a talk.
The Demon was surprised at him being able to speak their language, but then he slowly spoke again, and the Demon realized he wasn't actually speaking the language, but it could still understand his speech.
The MC told the Demon to think of it as some kind of telepathic conversation and move on, because that series doesn't really dwell on the 'law' of magic much give the sort of abilities it has.
