I'm amazed that this series, which has brought me to tears many times with its warm, knowing, depiction of loneliness and connection, also is so good as a competitive game series. The idea of Shimada having another "mode" that he shifts into when he makes a mistake, of wild desperate punching, that may be even stronger than his normal composed mode... it's so compelling in such a shonen-y way, and it fits with his character and the flow of the match in such an interesting way.

I really wish there where more pages. I thought I remembered there where more pages years ago, there where but it still was only a maximum of 20 pages. Still....10 is just bit on the short side. This is going to take even more years to finish,the mangaka will probably die of old age before finishing this 😞 I know I'm complaining about nothing that really matters, but I just want more of this story.

Shimadaaaaaaaaaa!!! Uh, this whole arc has been a feast for me, thank you so much to Hi Wa Mata Noboru for the excellent scanlation, I especially liked the lettering of the sound effects on pg 7 <3

Somehow very fitting despite Shimada's previous plays being described as "filled with quiet resignation and something resembling anger", relying on nothing but himself building up deficits to drown the opponent.
I like the depictions of Shimada's inner turmoil. His shogi journey depicted as a bridge of Shogi boards on the ocean, his position as beach sand eroding beneath his feet, and his resolve as subway stations where if he miss his train even once he will never reach his goal. It's been like 2 years building up to this but the characterization is still as consistent as ever, I love it.

Still looking forward to Rei buying that house next to grandpa's shop. Also getting a ring and having Hina equip it. The anime was so good I want more seasons. The VA's for Rei and Hina were in "Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible" and it was so great hearing them act together again.
