wow, what a twist! I thought a showdown with Gotou-san was inevitable, as the whole situation between him and Kiriyama was left unfinished... but I suppose it's very in-line with this series to not have whatever conclusion happens there not across the shogi board. It was interesting to see more of the home life of Kiriyama's next opponent too. He seems a lot more stable than a lot of the other pros lol. Perhaps a rare example for Kiriyama to follow in his journey to a life full of love and shogi?

So awesome we get to see the home life of kamakura, he should be a tough opponent for Rei. Can’t believe gotou wife passed, that’s so tragic. His whole world probably collapsed, and it brought on memories of Rei and his family. Looks like a lot will be happening for the last volume.

oh wow did not see that coming! at leat not like that, but wonder if we will see what will happen with Kyouko since she was in the affair with him. Don't remember much what happened with her since she last interacted with Rei, but she was stagnant while Rei was trying to move forward and doing much better than her

Two possibilities jump to mind, though I hope Sensei finds a third: She has the emotional maturity to comfort Gotou and truly empathize in which case he finally accepts her, or she says something stupid like "Now we can finally be together" or "Now she's finally gone" and Gotou hates her forever for voicing what he's long subconsciously felt guilty about.

to be honest I don't see them working together after this, like it was pretty toxic already, she pretty much was a replacement for his wife, but don't think he would love her at least not how Kyouko wants it and she pretty much he's using him because of her father complex because Rei pretty much took the place for her and her brother attention from his dad

Me either, realistically. (Which is why I hope Sensei finds a third possibility.)

I think you have the right of it wrt their dynamic, and I think that's likely to be the tone of the story going forward, though I would add one codicil: Whether legally so or not, she's still a kid. He should have always known better. No matter how sympathetic Gotou may be in the wake of his wife's death, he's still a POS.

oh yeah he is one big POS, guess time will tell if she matures after this, because she's older than Rei she should be like 20 or something like that, but yeah she still depends on her parents, the best option for her if she moves fowards and leaves Gotou, but I can't really see her doing that unless she has a final clousure with him

Given we haven't seen or even heard of Gotou or Kyouko since chapter 139 (that I can recall, anyway), I was honestly wondering if Umino-sensei had decided to not bring them back into the narrative, so this comes out of nowhere... but feels somehow very real as a result.

Those panels of Rei at his family's funeral hit so hard. It'd be a pity if he has to withdraw from the tournament, but I hope he realizes taking care of himself is the priority, and he visits the Kawamoto household ASAP.
