Apparently, if you read the last part of chapter 1 his goal is to officially return the lisence on the guild and get registered as an adventurer. That's just him being considerate.

The ideal mana porter is one who doesn't make the party aware of their mana consumption.

It's not something for them to realize if there's no oportunity for it, nor they are not made aware. Of course the hero is the dumb one though, since this seems to be somewhat of common sense in this world.

If I had a nickle for every fantasy manga I've read where the MC is kicked out of his party for being [insert negative trait] and the "hero" tried to sacrifice another party member to get out of a tricky situation due to kicking out said MC, but the other party members didn't give up, escaped succesfully, and abandon the hero, who then goes afeter MC to get him back, I would have 1 nickle, but I would bet that nickle I will find other manga with the same initial plotline.
