You can see depictions of pointy eared elves in older paintings, like The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania, Sir Joseph Noel 1849; or (arguably) the Eadwine Psalter, Scribe Eadwine 1155-1160.

Oberon and Titania aren't elves tho, they are faeries specifically the king and queen of the faeries.

Oberon and Titania aren't depicted with their ears showing. It's their huge entourage of different fantasy creatures that are depicted instead.

Huh, I didn't even notice that, her skin tone was so close to her hair color. I was looking at the entourage.

In any case, I figured two relatively famous examples would be enough to show that pointy eared depictions of various fair folk existed prior to Tolkien.
