Seems more like they weren’t in town when the disaster hit, so when they returned it was already destroyed.

Looks like they were hunters or maybe soldiers considering the uniforms and injuries.

Perhaps to honor their homeland, as they feel so connected to their nation which has since been destroyed that they linger as guides for others. Their ultimate goal does not seem to be money, so not getting treasure makes sense.
