Checked the RAW :v so if you wanna know
He proposed to the Goddess as soon as he saw her.

She refused immediately.
Then he didn't give up and ask for a reason at least.

Goddess said "well, previously there was this Inori guy y'see. I 'totally' fell in love with him at first sight, so unless your soul get stronger than him, nope"

Inori upon hearing that realized she used him as an excuse to say no and plan to hit her at least once if he ever meet that Goddess again

Obviously that Date guy is all raring for a fight, so Inori decide "eh sure"
Then ask "so 'how' will we have this match?"
Date monkey is confused.
Inori give a simple explanation "You wouldn't call a fight between someone with a gun and a sword a proper match would you?"
Date "and?"
Inori "See, my blessing is 'knowledge' so unlike your sword skills isn't not really suited for combat. But hey, if you just want to beat up someone under the condition heavily favored for you, who am I to say?"
And give this absolute asshole smug look at Date.

Being a monkey, Date obviously get baited into accepting Inori's suggestion.

That is to say, dungeon conquering competition.
Whoever clear the boss of the first floor faster win.
This way Inori can use his 'knowledge' for exploration, and Date can use his sword skills to monster killing, a challenge where both side can show off their power.

The princess snuck in and follow Inori (he obviously noticed)

And then
6 hours later Date beat the boss and is the winner.

Queen is ANGERY at Inori losing a match to another country's hero
Inori be like "Do you know what's the wager of this match?"
Queen ?
The answer might be a pun but basically "resourcefulness" with emphasis, and explains that basically the winner is the "more worthy man" to a certain lady, that is all.
Queen "....that's all?"

Because when a duel like this is called for, whatever is wagered before hand is absolute.
But because the wager was...that, for this country the match basically didn't mean anything.

And then Inori pull out a sack filled with treasure he got during that time to imply "hey look, it's not like I didn't do anything, look at all these shiny valuables I got in the mean time"

Then Ariya POV 'explains' how by using the match as a chance to go into the dungeon and bringing back those treasures, Inori have managed to reveal the value of 'knowledge' blessing to the country.
So instead of receiving slander for losing the duel, this ends up even removing the opinions of exiling him.

@WhimsiCat Well, my issue isn't that I want to know spoilers, but that I want more now and the novel translations, which are normally a source to get more story, are woefully behind.

@student4444 : I was editing the post since I read more of the RAW so feel free to check if you read that before I finish the edit.

Inori himself is somewhat of a troll as well so I think it's fair that he get trolled now and then.
