This thread is for suggesting and discussing new tags to be implemented on MangaDex.
Read the guidelines below then post your suggestion as a reply here.

All tags are subject to review by the mod team and are not guaranteed to be added.

Guidelines:

1. The tag should represent a broad theme or concept that can apply to many different series. Avoid tags that are too niche or abstract. Providing examples is encouraged to clarify where it would be used.
2. Provide a clear explanation of the tag's purpose and what type of content it's meant to categorize. At the very least your suggestion should answer the question: What type of content is it meant to categorize?
3. Avoid suggesting tags that could closely overlap with existing ones. If unsure, check our Tags Definition for guidance, ask if you're still unsure.
4. Tags should primarily focus on describing the content itself, such as its themes, genres, or storytelling structure. Tags that focus on external conditions or processes will be rejected. Other types of tags may be accepted, provided they help users identify the reading structure or navigational format of the content.
5. All suggested tags must align with our site rules. Tags for content that violates these rules will not be accepted.

Important:

Currently a rework is being done to handle "porn tags". This new system will allow us to categorize these tags to flag them appropriately and segregate them from the main list of tags. Suggestions for these tags will not be considered at this time.

Below is a list of tag suggestions that meet the above requirements and are subject to review by the mod team. This list is a work in progress and will be updated.

Hi. As part of a cleanup of the Mainsite Suggestions subforum, several threads have been merged into this megathread, which will be used to discuss and suggest new tags for MangaDex.
For the time being, it will remain locked until I finish writing the guidelines for suggesting tags and all suggestion have been linked in the suggested tags list. I will post a new comment once the whole thing is finished.

The guidelines have been added, and all the existing proposals have been subjected to them, which is why many were removed from the list. They may be reinstated if they meet the requirements of the guidelines.

The thread is now open.

This is not a list of tags that we will add. Only if the tag meets the previous requirements, it will be added to the list.
I got baited because I didn't read that line and jumped straight to the links you posted :aquadrink:

Anyway, in the conceivable future where we can browse through our library with tag filters, I'd probably use them, otherwise I very rarely use the tags right now, so I have nothing to add.
I agree with most of the suggestions though.

It would be nice to be able to filter series by number of translated chapters (eg 1-10, 10-50, 50-100, 100+).

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I think it's pretty crazy that there's no tag for "robots".

I also think it's kind of clunky that "monster girls" has a tag but any non-female humanoid monsters get tossed into the general "monsters" category. In general, I'd suggest some sort of tag for "kemonomimi" because when I think of a "monster" I don't think of, like, a cat. A girl who is also a dragon or a slime or something is a monster girl; a girl who just has cat ears and a tail doesn't seem like a monster to me. So I think a "kemonomimi" tag would be extremely useful, lest everyone looking on the "monster girl" or "animal" tags have to sort through a bunch of cat, dog, and bunnygirls/boys/everyone else.

(Personally, I'd also suggest a general "kemono/furry" tag, but I'm also aware there may not be a substantial enough amount of furry stuff on the site to justify it. At the very least, "robots" and "kemonomimi" would definitely be useful tags to have.)

Added back some tags and new ones:
  • Journey -> Slow travel, experiences along the way, growth through travel. Stories that focus on characters travelling and experiencing the world. Different from adventure and fantasy (adventure focuses on an epic journey in search of someone or something. Whereas fantasy is a world setting)
  • Dungeon Crawl -> More general term for "Tower/Dungeon". Usually, stories set in a multi-level tower, labyrinth or structured dungeon.
  • Politics -> The story involves political themes like court intrigue, faction struggles, succession disputes, etc.
  • Robots -> Could possibly overlap with "Mecha", but in this case it would mean robots on a smaller scale, or in a broader sense: androids.
  • Kemonomimi -> Pretty straightforward. Could overlap with the "animals" or "monsters"/"monster girls" tag, but there's still an aesthetic difference.

From now on, be sure to provide explanations (rule 4). We'll ignore suggestions without them unless it's very clear what they're for.

P.S. I've tweaked the wording for the rules and added one that I missed, as well as a clarification for "porn tags".

"CG set" often implies images without text (or very little text), so it's questionable whether we could have a tag for those (rule 1.2).
I know that some of them have text equivalent to a manga, so it depends on the set. But that's not guaranteed in the tag itself.
I'd like to have a tag for them, but I'd also prefer a different name where we can guarantee there's translated text, for the reasons I've explained.

TBH the only reason I am using that name is because of my browsing hitomi and ehentai and since hitomi is a sadpanda mirror basically it uses ehentai definitions for their gallery categories. I wonder what else we could use as a definition because the main reason I want it is to distinguish certain zurikishi comics (and crap where the bg doesnt change and the characters are pasted on) from other webcomics.

Alright, I'll update the ones apart from the already accepted, think a new post is better for visibility:

False underdog: Stories where the main character constantly gets treated like he is weak, except he actually isn't and actually is just overpowered. This would be the "I'm the weakest, but actually the strongest", "My useless skill is actually OP", "Level one but stronger than the final boss" type of titles, where the author makes the MC be considered rubbish, but be super-talented in actuality. Mostly, I think it would provide a good filter tag. Also, it would apply to that minor genre of "Guy has enough of a toxic girlfriend and then turns out to be a super talented gigachad" romance manga.

Need to cook a bit more on the "No Plot Armour" concept, gonna do that later.

Also, another one:
Japanese Nationalist Propaganda: Something to mark unironic propaganda manga, like "JSDF Wankfests", "Grorious Nipponese Culture", "Samurai/Japanese other warrior types beat every other type of gaijin soldier", "Japanese WW2 War Criminals are actually heroes and the war crimes did not happen"-type of Manga. Honestly, I think such a tag is really missing and should be applied. It should be somewhat restricted in usage, applying only where the shilling is obvious in nature.

Maybe. The name is kind of jargon-y, so something broader and immediately understandable to everyone would be better. I'm also sceptical about the number of titles it can be applied to. You're also applying several narrative tropes to it (overpowered MC, misunderstood genius, toxic relationship revenge), which makes it really convoluted. You could also argue that this is similar to Power Fantasy, or a subgenre of it.

Japanese Nationalist Propaganda
Definitely not. This is highly charged and not objective.

The title is the best I could think of, but fair, open to alternatives.
It is, however, a rather clear trope, given the fact that it's many copy & paste implementations constantly are findable inside the popular list and that it is a standard used by many.
On the current featured, already, I count like 7 from their description alone that it would apply to and one where I read the first chapter of and saw it happen in there as well.
It certainly is a subgenre of Power Fantasy, in the "I may be regarded as trash, but they don't know I am actually super powerful" thought.
Definitely not. This is highly charged and not objective.
I disagree. Gate - Where the JSDF Fought, Nihonkoku Shoukan, Rekkyou Sensen and others I do not care to remember the name off, clearly are such propaganda.
I guess what could be changed would be to turn it into a simple "Propaganda" tag and apply it to others, but there are obvious cases of unironic propaganda in manga, though I feel like it would hit a lot of.
Heck, Shokugeki no Soma later had a chapter where the author unironically wrote that "Oh, the POWs weren't mistreated, they just misunderstood this root food as being fed wood" (No, that doesn't mean I would suggest giving SnS that tag, but there are really plain in sight cases of this being spread via manga.)
In my opinion, Manga and other Comics that are obvious propaganda pieces should be marked as such.
