IDK why he can't call Serena, like:
Lhutenent Serena delay the next phase theres is to many small crystal ship out there, is we spread out now, the defense off the back line will be inpossible
It hasn't been explained in the manga, but I believe that normally that sort of message to a lieutenant in that situation would be recorded and shared. And if she tried to make it private in the middle of a battle, it would look suspicious. That would blow his cover and reveal to Serena's superiors who actually had information about a lifeform they didn't know anything much so far.
It would basically put them both in a lot of trouble if they get out victorious, which they will.

Because he doesn't want to out himself as a source of information duh. He says so in 56.2.

If I ever command a futuristic spaceship and ask for shield loss ratio, I'm probably going to want more details than "we're good".
Nah, you wouldn't have time for more details in a really critical situation anyway.

They're behaving as if crystal lifeforms play by instinct and are without plan, like creeps.
As for as the description relating to them that have been given, they do actually behave based on instinct only.

While it is later revealed that they are psychic/psionic creatures, but they are still monsters because there is no direct way to communicate with them yet.
And they have the habit of attacking any type of life-form, even Machine Intelligence like Mei, and have zombie/vampire-like or infectious characteristics (aka., any being that gets hit by their still-living crystal slowly turn into Crystal Lifeform themselves).

Aka., currently Crystal Lifeforms are basically like Virus that attack on Instinct.

Which is more concerning, acting as bait or being in the line of fire of the bombardment behind the mother crystal?
Well in the case of the "latter", atleast when it comes to Serena's regiment, they do provide the bombardment trajectory to all the smaller crafts fighting on the front line, so the chance of friendly fire is pretty low, as far as huge bombardment goes.

Aka., you are more likely to get hit by a friendly fire from those around you, than from the Mothership/Battleship behind.

So did the empire actually lose to the robots and controlled the empire from behind the scene?
As others have said it's been implied for a while now.
And later on it's confirmed, however it's less "controlled by ai" and more the ai handle the heavy lifting and keep humanity from doing anything stupid, essentially the ai won but didn't care if humans ran themselves for the most part, as long as they were kept from killing themselves or the ai's, which is what they mainly do for the most part.
Ai's technically control the empire, but it's more like a benevolent shadow government keeping things in check more than a cruel ai system that keeps "biologicals" in line.

probably because she isn't the commander of the fleet
he says it in the manga, "How would she convince the whole fleet?"
she has to do a whole another meeting to change their tactics, which would take too much time even if she would eventually be successful

Facing entire planet like monster on his own? Isaac Clark would be proud. :chad:

Cannot wait to see how glorious the engagement will be the next chapter.
He said it's like an asteroid, guessing on the large side so probably about a 1000 km in diameter, like Ceres. It's still incomparable to a planet, otherwise they'd basically have no hope of destroying it.

In an era of space age exploration, most device any if not everything can likely be accessed by the AIs. Banks, weapons production facilities, remote control tranport vehicles, you name it, the AI could hack into those and bar/freeze any human plans or development. They won't even get a chance if the wanted them dead. The only reason humanity is alive there is because the inherent code in AI is still to be of use to humans.

On a side note I wonder how the crystal lifeforms track their target, in Elite, radar detection and the lock-on use heat signature, which is why players developed 'cold running'
If that were the case, no war would even be possible. They had to be able to keep the enemy from their systems. However, an actual AGI civilization is simply insurmountable by a biological one, unless there's a massive technological imbalance in the organics' favour. They have only one real need, energy, which you wouldn't be able to deny them when they're spacefaring.

Unless some wacky unknown physics are involved, that's the only real way to do it. Something like a space ship, even unmanned would stand out heat production-wise against the background of space.

I was going by this comment:

Because it is, the novel specifes it as similar size to a minor/dwarf planet.

I re-read the chapter with the resort planet AI and that was what the AI was basically saying. To paraphrase: "Humans were in severe economic collapse... most casualties, though few, came from cases of AIs defending itself... At the time, AIs biggest problems were a few toasters and hairdriers that got delusional and were calling for genocide. They were dealt with swiftly."

Sounds like the AIs hadnt even gone on the offensive yet and they were just waiting for us meatbags to tire out.

Iirc someone else also mentioned that many AIs in this world like to keep humans around to watch our love lives unfold like reality TV romcoms.

It was by peace treaty from a stalemate of both sides. The Sierra Prime resort arc explains it all in detail.
Nope, in future sagas they will give more details about it but it's heavily implied that the humans lost very badly and the bots mostly allowed the elite of the empire to divulge that there was a "stalemate" and a "peace treaty" to allow them to save face.

That's the reason why the nobles always avoid talking about those topics, because as you may notice appearances are really important for them.
