I don't know about the LN, but in the WN it wasn't Mimi's classmate (or, she didn't describe it as such), it was Mimi. She was the one with a boyfriend whom she lost to a maidroid.

While both versions of the story fit Mimi's fears well, it is interesting to imagine how her story would have changed had her former boyfriend not dumped her.

Like, she would have had the support and counsel to both reject her parents' debt and have a place to live until... I'll stop there as there's massive spoilers, but she would still most likely end up a space mercenary, just without Hiro, so she'd also probably be more cynical and not be part of a harem.

She's only partly an individual. For the main network it might be like having an arm with an amygdala. Like yeah, it can think, but not really, if yo want a new arm no one will call it murder.

Sorry for not replying sooner. Unfortunately, the WN was just as offscreen as the manga when it came to Mei convincing Mimi keeping her was a good idea. So no one but the author knows that.

Oh, and my thought experiment aside, I honestly prefer the idea that it was Mimi's friend who got dumped, if for no other reason than it feels like were getting a tiny bit more world building. If everything that happens always directly involves the crew, it makes the story feel too much on the insular side.

And I completely agree that it makes more sense for Mimi to accept Mei if it was her friend and not her. The WN seems to be treated like a first draft where feedback can be given before it gets polished and put into the LN, which is probably why things like the Manga (and I suspect the LN) have it so that it was Mimi's classmate who lost her boyfriend to a maidroid.

Just clarifying on the ex-boyfriend thing to clear things up since there's quite a bit of misinformation going around.

First, the official translation is a mistranslation. Regarding Mimi's ex-boyfriend thing, in Japanese there are 2 versions of the story, LN = WN version and the manga version that we see here.

Spoiler: LN = WN(they're the same when it comes to this line)

歩きながらそう聞くとミミは少しの間沈黙し、やがて自分の中で言葉の整理がついたのか口を開きはじめた。
「スクールに通ってた頃、仲の良い子が男の子と付き合ってたんです」
As I asked her this while we were walking, Mimi was silent for a little while, then, as if she had sorted her words out, she began to speak.
"When I was in school, a good friend(of mine)/仲の良い子 was dating a boy."

As someone said in this thread, the official translation changed it to "Mimi's ex-boyfriend" while in the original, Mimi said it was "a good friend of hers".

Though to be fair, the way she phrased it and the way the author portrayed this scene, like how she took a moment to think and sort her words, makes it seem like she was actually speaking from experience(her own ex-boyfriend) but was too embarrassed or didn't want to bring up her past so she framed it as "a story about a friend of mine".

Then we have the manga version that we see here, where it's explicitly shown without a doubt that Mimi was really talking about her classmate's ex-boyfriend. The manga version changes it from (a vague)"friend of mine" to a "classmate" and makes it absolutely clear that she has no ex-boyfriend.

Anyways I also agree with electro_neanderthal that the WN version is likely something like a draft(or you can interpret it as the author's original vision) and the manga version is the polished, revised one.
I say this because I've seen quite a few cases of this, like Myon's HypnoApp series also had 2 different versions, the original kakuyomu/Web Novel and the Light Novel/Manga version(iirc the manga is based on LN).

Generally, the revised version is more toned down, safe(less influence from author's own bias and fetishes) and such and personally I think most of the time it's an improvement(makes sense since it's the result of many feedbacks).
