I'm thinking that such "memorial shrines" are pretty common. I've seen them in other manga -- it's basically an in-house memorial to the dead. So I don't think that it's anything to do with him being a household god.

However... My quick search indicated that it was shinto based (not buddhist based). And there's the pretty obvious fact -- her name is "Miko" == "Shinto Priestess". So a pretty obvious guess: The family line is of Shinto priests. I.e. something like, even though the family not longer runs a Shinto Shrine, the Shinto Priest/Priestess lineage still applies.

It isn't that complicated. Shinto originally didn't have funerary rites or an afterlife doctrine, but it was later developed in response to competition with Buddhism which does. In the modern Shinto understanding, the dead join the ranks of the "eight million gods" (yaoyorozu no kami) and the family become their worshippers. So, daddy is technically the family god now.

Feels more and more like Miko needs to learn to fight for herself. Maybe we get a full on training from the masters at some point, but it doesn't feel like the author wants shounen ghost battles at least not from Miko. Ironic given her name. Maybe she can learn to purify them or let them move on.

I am SO FASCINATED by what is going on with her dad. I am assuming he could also see spirits, like Miko does, and one reason he's sticking around is to keep the house a safe space for her

I don’t think he will get it because this is purely speculation be he has more of his moms side than his fathers side so he probably won’t inherit the eyes but this is all theory

Dad and his ?ghost horse? buddy remind me of another "duo" from an old Novel I've read from the series Deathgate cycle, that duo is Zifnab and his Dragon, both have silly fights and dialogues among them(like how dad and the horse fought over his offerings) and act silly in general, with the dad being seemingly oblivious of his condition(zifnab is seemingly senile and brings up old movie/novel quotes like tv ads or LOTR quotes), but when things hit the fan he is not someone you can mess with seemingly due to the dragon's presence.
