So it's been established that we know nothing about the old guy because there is nothing to know about him, unknowable horror style.

Now that that's been established, I certainly hope it stays that way. If he turns out to have an explanation, that'd be disappointing.

I do prefer that we have some lore on how the mom encountered it, or is it connected to mom’s bloodline.

Because the other examples are people who can't perceive the ghosts.

It's already established that they're like a one-way mirror. The more you acknowledge them, the more they can disturb you.

That's why all the ghosts so far tries to repeatedly called/harassed Miko for the same reason.
