Yeah. We know shinigami and bad ghosts/spirits are locked in a forever battle in general Japanese lore (good ghosts/spirits voluntarily pass on). Miko can't tell the difference between which ones are good, which ones are bad, and which ones are which faction, and she can't tell the difference between passing on voluntarily and involuntarily (they both look brutal to her).

We, as the audience, have a pretty good idea at this point, or at least a pretty good educated guess.

Honestly while everyone is like "why did the tentacles not protect Miko" and "oh the axe ghost might not be a bad spirit" the real reason is just that the axe ghost doesn't hit people, he swings his axe and if you're possessed he hits the ghost inside of you drags it out and kills it.

You as a living person go completely unharmed in the process, Miko was scared yeah because she can see ghost and interact with them in ways most people can't so she couldn't be sure that she'd be fine, but she was. So the tentacle entity itself wouldn't react because it knows Miko will go unharmed by the axe ghost.

Lol, I have a feeling this will be a Chekhov's gun in future chapter. Just wait until Axe-kun protects Mio from some murdering insanely evil spirits in the future (or Mio exploiting him by luring evils spirit to the train lmao).

I was at the edge of my seat precisely because of this. If Michiru's spirit and the axe guy got into a fight, one of them most likely would have been done for. But knowing both of them so far have been kind of benevolent spirits, or at least with aligned objectives. We might need them in the future, along with the one accompanying her dad.
