That was a fun make up talk, plenty anger and yelling but everything finally out in the light. And Masaki definitely has some kind of extra sight and now Kasumi is developing it from repeated possessions. Interesting.

I .... kind of wonder if Aizawa was "encouraged" into becoming an idol by Nagi, and then when Nagi died, Aizawa continued, but lost a lot of her "innocence"/that quirkiness we see in her now that she's a ghosty girl. In that flashback, she also had a bit of ditzy clumsiness, indicating that the "formulaic perfect idol princess angel" that Masaki & Honda describe didn't always exist.
It strikes me that there's another reason for Aizawa to seem so different both as a ghost and in pre-idol flashbacks to everyone's perception of her idol self: if Aizawa wasn't driving the car for long periods while she was an idol. Nagi (or the theoretical ghost behind the ghost?) could have been puppeting her around.

I know it's extremely unlikely at this point but I can't lie I'm still hoping for the ending where Honami comes back to life.. I hope we get to see more scenes of when Honami was alive & how her and Michi met and all. Why did Michi have to lose her memory 😭

Still wonder how the yuri is going to work out in this manga🤔 Wouldnt even be surprised if it turns out she wasnt dead, but in a coma and her spirit for some reason left her body. Cant remember what other series did that…

How spooky. I'm going to have to compile all of beltaro's posts into a huge book and consult it before and after every upload if I even hope to make sense of this manga.
But it's so charming that, even if I am a bit lost sometimes, I always look forward to the next chapter. Thank you for the TL!

Okay i have the most crackpot theory that i had to create an account to air out. After binge reading this entire series in one night (i may be sleep deprived and may have huge mis-remembrance or misinterpretation), I have to air out these things that i caught on which are the axioms i base my theory on. I would go back and read through the manga and link to give further credence, and i may do that later. I’d like to also thank the glorious translators for their little summaries and theories and notes in the forum threads and in the twitter extra translations, for fuelling my inane ramblings.

- Michi refuses to have her picture taken cos spooky spirits will pop up and that’ll freak people out, yet before memory loss, Michi was either confident enough or just brave enough to take a selfie with Aizawa (as presented by non when they encounter at the cultural festival and Michi’s ardent denial causes Aizawa’s first freak out as a ‘bad’ spirit) Michi and Aizawa (now i distinctly recall some redraw of this that appeared in a later chapter where Michi shared the same fairylike look that Aizawa often sports when she’s happy, not the two black dots for eyes she usually sports)

- When one is possessed by a ghost, one has no memory of what one’s body did during possession, as prominently represented by Kasumi

- A theme of memory and remembrance underscores the entire manga, that Aizawa’s dream is to be an ‘eternal idol’ yet when she sees people either deny her or reject her (Michi at the culture fest, then Masaki alleging Honda is a fake fan), Aizawa freaks out, and Aizawa’s kin, the dead 5-chan (instantly forgot her name) also shares this idea of being remembered, as she freaks out when Tear-san sings Aizawa part during a recording session, and again during the jumpscare when Ange is possessed to choke the hell out of Non-tan

- On the point of memory, 5-chan dies before Delphi debuts and so instead of delaying or announcing the tragedy, the agency goes ahead and pretends there were ever 4 members, 5-chan is forgotten, not even Honda (the ultimate stan, following from the very beginning at the audition process) seems to know; only Masaki, who reached the final round, is aware that 5 people had the potential to debut and 4 of those 5 people did but not 5-chan

- Michi has freakishly good sports and athletics and gymnastics skills that just pop out spontaneously, almost subconsciously, such as when she scored that soccer goal and when she back flipped outta Aizawa’s kiss and this display of physical prowess impresses witnesses (as if she’s, or rather her body’s, been trained to be showboaty in its movement)

- Repeated possession, as represented in Kasumi, makes one more vulnerable to future possession as one, on some spiritual level beyond Michi (as only so far Sakaya notices or else we would’ve definitely seen Michi internally freak out her friend is a gaping wound), becomes ‘holier,’ and possible be given the spiritual sight

- The ‘AM’ pentagram mark was made by Mini Michi to filter out strong ghosts from entering school premises, such as Ange possessed by dead 5-chan, suggesting that in the past, a strong ghost (possibly 5-chan) breached the school and wrought enough havoc that Mini Michi had to step in, but she weakened so then Sakaya had to use her blood and messed up the calligraphy club’s performance at the culture fest

- Aizawa was often sick in life, missing school because of this. Whether this illness is similar to the illnesses seen caused by ghosts, such as in Ange, Kasumi and Masaki, we are yet to see but the evidence does suggest this

- Aizawa died in her school uniform on the night of the Obon festival, in the middle of August, presumably during the summer school holidays, so maybe she had catch up due to her illness or something and wanted to catch up with her girlfriend Michi who went without her father

- Aizawa is a ghost magnet , and trapped in the school. Ghosts are free to travel the physical world as they end up at the school because of Aizawa, yet Aizawa (possibly by the pentagram) is trapped at the school, maybe for her own good.

- Aizawa’s ghost has no visible damages which could suggest her manner of death, but she is described to be ‘melting’ by Sakaya during her first freak out.

- Mama Michi is big dead , she’s super dead, possibly when Michi was young if that picture on the shrine is anything to go by

- Michi is unable to express love to Aizawa, no matter how she tries, and she also feels distant and despondent , likely consequences of her memory loss

- Michi interacted with Kasumi in the past, yet (i can’t remember if the reader learns this through Michi or Kasumi) Michi has a hard time recalling it, or can even recall it at all

- Michi can not recognise the sign of possession, as learnt when Aizawa, in Kasumi’s body, chokes the hell out of Masaki.

- I have no idea of the merits of the extra art and twitter art but there was one piece where Aizawa was in a her school uniform, sitting by a swimming pool, with a dark setting, suggesting possibly night.

- The reader has never seen Aizawa speak, neither in death or in Masaki’s flashback where’s she’s alive.

okay so here’s my crackpot theory.
Michi, when she was young, was mourning her mother, then her ghost appeared and Michi interacted with it, (from the panels of the early chapters, where Michi learnt to never interact with ghosts, it appeared to be black tendrils assaulting her, i believe this was some possession), resulting in her possession. Maybe Michi’s mother refused to die and saw her daughter as some way to continue living, anyways the ghost is discovered and exorcised (possibly by bad-ass Neo, where she ‘failed’ Michi the first time in either having to call in somebody else, not stopping the possession in the first place, or just blames herself for what came after). However, this event had irreparable consequences as Michi herself became susceptible to possession (like Kasumi), yet because she kept her head down and gave no cause for ghosts to freak out, another possession never occurred. Then, Honda skipped the welcoming ceremony for first years, and here Aizawa and Michi meet. Assume a romance, judging by the behaviours of Aizawa and Michi throughout the manga. It’s cute and whatnot, yet Aizawa is often sick and can’t attend, though she raves to her bandmates, particularly Non-tan, about how great it is (through text! the reader does not see Non-tan recall a dialogue between the two, only old texts). Aizawa’s chief reason for raving about her school is her girlfriend Michi though she doesn’t seem to mention that directly, as Non-tan calls Michi Aizawa’s friend, not anything more, when they encounter at the culture fest.

5-chan is furious. She and Aizawa were supposed to be idols together, yet the agency presses Aizawa and the gang to pretend she never existed, her death before their debut never happened and there was always 4 members that debuted. 5-chan, in a “if i can’t be an idol, no one can” attitude, acts as a malevolent spirit that hangs around Aizawa. This results in Aizawa often being sick. But when 5-chan grows bored or just stops inexplicably, Aizawa is well enough for school and has her little romance with Michi who doesn’t go out often (as Michi’s father is pleasantly surprised when Michi, later, announces she’s going out with friends on a shopping trip during the cooking class plot point).

Now here’s the crackpot: at some point, Michi was possessed by 5-chan.

Michi, at some point before meeting Aizawa, is trained in the art of exorcism, maybe under Neo, and loses her fear of ghosts as she knows how to beat the hell out of them. A bonus is athleticism. Michi and Aizawa have their little romance and Michi is none the wiser that Aizawa is often possessed, and they’re so cute that they take a selfie which Aizawa sends to Non-tan. Now, 5-chan had enough and sets on murdering Aizawa to death forever. So 5-chan enters the school and discovers that Kasumi is susceptible to possession and so possesses her to try getting close and do the bad, but is never able to, only ever getting close to Michi, who’s unable to recognise Kasumi’s possession.

Frustrated, 5-chan decides to attempt to possess Michi herself, but the exorcist Michi catches her and before she can stranglehold her to the afterlife, 5-chan quickly spouts a sob story of being Aizawa’s dead sister/relative/closest friend, which Aizawa would’ve no doubt confided in to her girlfriend and the pressures of keeping quiet, and how she wishes to give one final message to Aizawa before she can pass on peacefully without violent means. Michi, the sucker for love, is moved and agrees to deliver the message. Michi and 5-chan, on the night of the Obon festival, rendezvous with Aizawa, returning from summer school hence the summer uniform, at a swimming pool. Maybe Michi confesses already her exorcist career and so Aizawa isn’t freaked out at ghosts existing. However, Michi is possessed (being susceptible from her mother’s possession) or 5-chan is just close enough with Michi’s guard down that she strikes. Maybe Aizawa ends up drowning and her memories aren’t perfect, maybe Aizawa is killed some other way. But, Aizawa is dead … because Michi let her guard down. And Michi, using her knowledge of exorcism and ghosts attempts to give Aizawa new life, and feeling guilty for her murder, uses her blood mixed with ink to make the pentagram under Aizawa’s desk. This pentagram traps Aizawa’s ghost to the classroom, keeps out strong ghosts (such as 5-chan), and creates a Mini Michi who knows everything, possessing Michi’s locked away memories because she feels so much guilt for Aizawa’s death that she deems herself unworthy with ever interacting with her, or loving her, again, reverting to that frightened state of ghosts, frightened of Aizawa’s ghost forever, yet her guardian to ensure she lives eternally.

A fortnight later, summer break ends, school returns, Aizawa’s death is formally announced to the class, having broken out earlier in the news—the manga begins and Michi sees the dead Aizawa-san.

The merits of this theory are shaky, I know and may present my possible lack of understanding of this manga, but this story is so compelling and so complex, i can’t help but be fuddled.

I’ve a second, crazier theory where Michi was possessed from like the very beginning. And was never taught exorcism. 5-chan discovers Michi and Aizawa’s closeness and possesses Michi for extended periods of time, resulting in Michi’s memory loss, and using their burgeoning relationship to assist in her endeavours, in some strange twisted form of incest, but revenge is revenge. At some point, 5-chan trains Michi’s body in the ridiculous athleticism of idols. It all culminates in the night of the Obon festival, where Aizawa, returning from summer school, meets up with Michi and they have a little romance. They then break into a swimming pool or something and here Aizawa is drowned or dies.

One criticism of my theory: We learn Kasumi and Sakaya‘s early relationship and surely Sakaya, in her strange ways, would’ve surely been pushed to do something about her possessed situationship (pre-Obon), as she can recognise the effects of possession. A possible explanation is that Aizawa is the one possessed all along by 5-chan, explaining why in Sakaya’s drawing of Michi and Aizawa that Aizawa has that strange cross-hatching across half her body as Sakaya can recognise possession, or the consequences of it at least.

You are a worthy disciple of beltaro-sama! Great theory (and a great writeup in general)

KASUMI

It also opens a new door if ghost exposure leads to ghost vision. Is Kasumi's power limited to Aizawa, or can she see them all? Will her eyes get fuzzy too?

You can see on this page here, where Kasumi is peeking through her fingers, we can see a bit of her right eye and it does look a bit fuzzy.

I don't think Misaki has literal star vision, I think it's more of visual representation of "that special something"
She sees that special something in Delphi and honda, and she doesn't have that without honda
That may be so, but considering this is a story about people who have special eyes that allow them to see ghosts that others can't, there is precedence to believe that Masaki may have literal "star vision".
