It’s the job of a good translation to make things non ambiguous for the readers, even if that means vying slightly away from the litteral translation of the original. Translation notes should be restricted to (1) cultural concepts that can’t be translated (like a brand that has no equivalent in the destination language) or (2) things that can absolutely not be translated in any way (for a good example, in the French translation of Good omens, there’s a note when the American guard asks “You burn faggots?” because there’s no way in French to transpose the double meaning of faggot).
