It's not getting depressing per se, but yeah, the focus seems to have gradually shifting from comical aspects to the psychological aspects of the characters. It went from "Haha funny gay femboy in the closet" to the aforementioned closet being the entire fucking world and how they have no control over their life.

I guess it's nice to see the classmates getting fleshed out and how Hareta is actually a likable guy. Yes, the girls like him already but his kindness makes them like him even more.

And it's not just a story about one guy chasing another and the girls getting jealous and petty unreasonably.

I do like that despite Hareta being a literal faceless self-insert MC the story is going out of its way to show why all the girls (and even misaki, much as he's fighting it) crush on him so hard. He has an eye for people, and helps others see the best in themselves.

I wonder if there is a rule engraved in their world that makes the heroines fall in love with the protagonist no matter what
hareta doesn't seem to have such a rule for him as he never felt any kind of attraction towards the heroines (or any girl for that regard), not sure if it's only possible cuz he's the protagonis (player) or they actually have the freedom to feel attraction to any character in the game (regardless if they can romance them or not)
it doesn't really help that hareta is genuinely a likeable character so it's not surprising that they fall for him, but misaki said before that if hareta keeps ignoring the heroines flags they'll end up hating him, but no matter how much hareta ignores their flags or make it clear that he's only interested in misaki, they never seem to start hating him or stop pursuing him, so makes me think they might have some freedom to how they feel towards the protagonist…
