This uncomfortably made me remember actual dolphins behaviour in the wild. I think he may be a Beluga though, so, he's should be safe.

I agree. this isn't a random ass-pull of introducing a forgotten childhood friend or someone they knew in middleschool to add drama. This was very clearly planned.
