@shanoc5902 There was Kaoru's flashback in a previous chapter that seems like he was looking down on Kaede when she was hanging onto the cliff. Kind of suggest he either pushed her down or didn't help her at that time. The reason i am saying this like that is because of their mother's clear favoritism toward Kaede from her reaction when Kaoru dressed up as his sister for the first time which is extreme relief thinking it was Kaoru who died and not Kaede.

For some reason I kinda have a feeling that Kaoru experienced the "Long live the king" thing from the lion king
Though I'm not so sure if it was because he can't help her at all or he pushed her off (Can be either intentionally or unintentionally)

Think it's implied that Ryou had bad experience with women, maybe it started off when he was rejected by Kaede and due to commotion it ended with tragedy, then wherever he had connection with women his obsession about Kaede interfered...
