Well yeah, the author botched it, as I said.
Guess it's a problem of wanting to have their cake and eat it too, with the author wanting their mc both be regarded as the creepy child but actually be a faultless saintess, with everyone except her assigned boytoys being wrong about her.
The boys part is worrying.
But compassion is not really a quality of her character.

WN version is much simpler (prefer it that way for one-shot).
There's only one guy, the 1st Prince who approached Serena with a deal to imply the Violets play both sides. But Serena herself didn't really care about him, and his screen time is also sparse. Rosemary is got more time than him, and the romance rush in the last part.

The LN added that boy she picked up during a slave trader raid operation (the guy with burned face in the opening).

As for being flawless saintess... not. Probably a blessing she's not reincarnated from modern world who glorify equality. Rather than being kind, she's rational in most case. The Prince is interested because her thinking is like an adult rather than spoiled lady, she know her position, how she should act in the capacity so other people don't take her lightly, and understand the right way to face the high society full of back stabbing. Which... in his position as crown prince, would be a very attractive quality for life partner. Don't want your queen to be a careless liability.

About the mother, as a person who is more on the quiet side, I can sort of understand the conflict. Serena was self-contain and don't make demands, as she had a matured mind in the body of a young child. This make her mother felt unneeded and lack of purpose. Because her attention wasn't reciprocated in the way that she expected. Basically, it's a clash of conflicting personalities.
However, the mother was still an adult. It was her responsibility to "fix" the problem with Serena, not avoiding the problem by adopting another child to fill her needs. But people are flawed. They became a lesson and not a role model.

I'm glad to see that the father is seeing through all this BS and called out the mother for her naive decisions. Now all he's trying to do is to try to smooth over this messy situation the mother had put them in. Though it does seem like the commoner girl is going to be hard for him to get through and that the mother had already spoiled the girl at this point.

Changes from the LN
  • Serena already intend to join underground guild to have real combat experience, so being invited by Rick is saving her the trouble. The LN doesn’t have scene of her weighing her options.
  • It’s Rick who suggested Shia as a double when Serena is out to do her job, without Serena need to ask him.
  • Serena commented, Shia’s magic stone choker doesn’t look out of place worn by a noble lady. It’s decorated with gemstones. Magic stone itself is very rare and would fetch price enough to buy a castle. But those thing are probably easier to get in the underworld, after all, you need to pay large sum of money to request for someone’s life.
  • Serena herself think the price people put is too high. Besides being smarter, human life itself is no difference from animal’s.
  • The LN didn’t mention about Serena showing the mansion and introducing the servants in this scene.
  • Alto is still a popular man even after he’s married.
  • He shows more dislike towards Rosemary. His reprimanding his wife about adopting a daughter without his approval, he say it right in front of Rosemary. And when she start her usual “do you hate me”, he only tells her “I’m speaking with Amaryllis, so can you not interrupt me?”
  • Rosemary didn’t run out of the room. Alto told Howard, his adjutant, to bring her out. Howard was also a commoner, but Alto trusted his talent. Howard also held dislike of Rosemary because she’s only a duke’s daughter from luck.
  • Rosemary is smart enough to know crying is more effective than getting angry, because most people would hesitate, and she can put herself as victim. It doesn’t work on Howard, but other servants are feeling sympathy for her.
  • While Amaryllis and the servants thought Rosemary had it hard, Alto doesn’t think so. He knew Rosemary got adopted soon after her parents die, so she never need to experience life in the slum. Compared to most orphan, she is very lucky.
  • It doesn’t show in the manga, but Serena quite hate her mother. She think Amaryllis is too carefree and stupid for her own good.
  • Other than trying to go home more often, Alto also say he will send letters, and Amaryllis should consult to him before making another decision on her own.
  • Serena actually thought of killing Alto if he found out, but it’s a bad idea. She is still too young, and Amaryllis doesn’t have the ability to be head of the family. Worse case, they would get taken over by one of the branch families.
  • The silver lining is, Serena and Alto rarely meet each other. This means they don’t know each other well. Serena and Shia can just avoid him, and he doesn’t know Serena enough to notice if something is off.

I want that mother (she doesn't even deserve to be called a mother I just can't be bothered to remember her name) to die so many painful deaths before suffering for eternity in whatever afterlife they believe in.

The dad... might be okay. He's still absentee but in this society that's understandable and he's pretty reasonable in his responses to the situation. I honestly thought the mom was single, so the fact that she adopted a literal random off the streets despite not consulting with her husband is wild. He also makes a very good point that they already have a responsibility to their own daughter and they can't just ignore that and replace her because she's too difficult to handle (especially when the mom's only reason is that she can just spoil the other child... Literally WTF, "I don't like that I have to love and understand and work towards forming a deep emotional bond with my actual child so let me just pick one off the streets that I can just throw money at and feel good about.").

I also want to add it does not feel like there was a time skip at all. I wonder if that was a mistake (on the last chapter a comment mentioned there was none in the WN). This feels like the first actual conversation the mother and father have had since the adoption and I really hope that didn't take 6 years.

Well that pissed me off. She gave birth to her, then dared to question whether she was her real daughter? What, was she an idiot?

He sensed blood from her, threw a knife right at her skull, which she dodged easily. If that's not proof of her ability, I'm not sure what is.

I agree that it came a bit out of nowhere though. It would have been better if the scouting happened at a more secluded spot and not in a weapon shop and right in front of the shopkeeper no less.
Still, proof of ability to dodge a knife is not equals as taking another human lives. That is kinda much to ask from random 12 years old noble girl.

If the artist spends bit more time like "The girl builds up rep with adventure guild or was seen her perform during class" that makes it more logical.

The way they potray it is just:
  • guild leader throw knife
  • girl evade
  • guild leader "join me and kill peepo"
  • girl "ok"

It is way to lazy for me.

There's none. Maybe a few months after the fact, but definitely not the whole 6 years of not coming home at all.

Timeline goes like
  • 6 years old : Rosemary's adoption. Serena recruited to assassins guild. Mud water incident.
  • 12 years old : Picked up Tigur. First tea party (LN added one practice tea party which Rosemary didn't attend because she failed her manner lesson). Rosemary getting engaged to the second prince. Serena took a deal from the first prince to maintain power balance in the noble society. Second mud water incident. Serena threatening a knight. The princes visiting Violet house.
  • 16 years old : School arc. Rosemary playing typical villainess. The second prince shooting his own feet. Conflict with the king's second queen.

I guess so, the entire premise is cheap and weird anyway. The other series about an assassin getting reincarnated into an assassin's house was much more interesting. Although I also dropped it when they introduced guns and snipers into a medieval setting.

Honestly, the whole "is it reallly my child" line of thinking would make sense if it was one of those stories where MC gets reincarnated into the middle of their childhood and suddenly changes. Which isn't the case here. The mother knew MC for as long as she was alive (in this life) so it feels kind of baffling. As far as she should be aware, outside of the "almost killing the pitbull that tried to eat her that one time" part, MC seems to just be a normal introverted child.
The guild recruitment is a hugely rushed plot point. Either we are not notified of some crucial information about MC, or they really just recruited a 12 year old noble's daughter based entirely on the rumor of her killing that one dog when she was 6.
The way i look at the whole mothers reaction to Mc is "She isn't what I wanted" she expected her daughter to be a mini her and adopted sister knows exactly what the mother wants and plays on it.

The father is the only good and smart parent.
A shame he only memories that woman for her looks because she cannot run a duke's mansion.

Just because your blood daughter is not an idiot like you, ya treat a commoner girl with the same brain as you better.

Trash.

Everyone is blaming the shitty character that is the mother. In my opinion, this entire manga is straight up shit. From the story to the characters.

If the author had made the mc genuinely do something unsettling, multiple times, maybe it would make sense for the mother to distance herself.

As it stands, she just comes off as a wishy washy person, who blamed a child nearly harmed by a dog for fighting back, and completely treated her like air in response to said child fighting off an aggressive dog. Incredibly unlikable mother gosh. Didn't think it could get worse than that other series where the mum writes off her daughter as irredeemable and evil at like age 2.

It's kinda sad to see your own mother saying something like that about her feelings of you...

The assassin scouting plot is really out of place here.
yeah I agree like story wise what's the point I thought the point is the job switch the knight becomes the assassin and she becomes a knight and they meet again and fall in love or something.
so what's the point is she is still an assassin just richer.

So the mom wanted some cheerful kid and got a taciturn one instead and decided she wasn't her kid? She needs help.

Plot seems super rushed.

Damn, her mother is a real cunt. "Why can't our daughter act like our manipulative, adopted child?"
By the way, who does that? Adopting a random child? This is not a cat ffs, we're talking about a human being, who is much more complex. Talk about naivety.
I can already guess how the rest will play out. The adoptive bitch somehow manages to manipulate everyone to get rid of her biological daughter, and the only place the MC has left is the assassin guild.
